New principals to greet students at some Lafayette schools

Several new principals will take over as leaders of Lafayette Parish schools as the school year gets underway for students on Tuesday.

Interviews are still underway to fill at least one principal spot, at Ernest Gallet Elementary.

Some new principals replace longtime administrators, like Janice Moncrief, of Myrtle Place, and Youngsville Middle’s Darrel Comb, both of whom retired after the end of the last school year.

Patricia Thompson replaces Moncrief at Myrtle Place, and Renee Nunez was hired earlier this summer to replace Comb.

Stepping into the school leader role has been a bit easier with the support of his school staff and district leaders, new Ridge Elementary Principal Mark Rabalais told the School Board at its meeting Wednesday. His appointment at Ridge was announced during the board meeting.

He said his staff is busy preparing for the students who will arrive on Tuesday.

“We’re going to put a heartbeat in that building that can be heard and felt,” Rabalais told the board.

Earlier this summer, the district made two other principal appointments: Jamilah Hicks as the new principal at J.W. Faulk Elementary and Erin Gray as the new principal at Carencro Heights Elementary.

The new principals each held assistant principal jobs in the district prior to their promotions. Their appointments created administrative shifts across the district, with some existing assistant principals making moves to different schools and others promoted to new roles.

Some openings were created by retirements and resignations.

In the past few months, the Lafayette Parish School System reported the following administrative personnel changes to the School Board:

Employee transfers:

Elizabeth Landry, assistant principal at Broussard Middle, replaces David Hebert. Landry was previously counselor at Katharine Drexel Elementary.
