Home set on fire to cover up burglary

While the occupants of a home on Tecumseh Street were out Saturday night, someone set fire to their house to try to cover up a burglary, the Fire Department said.

The fire at 3400 Tecumseh St., started about 11:35 p.m., Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Curt Monte said Sunday in a news release.

Investigators “determined that the house was burglarized and set on fire to cover up the crime,” the release says.

The five people living in the home were out when the Fire Department arrived and found nearly half the home ablaze.

Fire damaged the living room, a front bedroom and the parts of the attic above those rooms, Monte said. Water and heavy smoke damaged the rest of the house.

Firefighters doused the blaze in about 20 minutes. Damage to the $45,000 home was about $25,000.
