Flash flood warning issued for south central Louisiana

The National Weather Service has extended its flash flood warning for south central Louisiana until 5 p.m. Friday. The affected area covers the parishes of Lafayette, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion.

Vermilion Parish officials are providing sandbags at five locations and have closed two roads due to heavy rain, Sheriff Mike Couvillon said.

Sandbags can be picked up at parish barns at 13115 Mack Switch Road in Erath; 16480 Cleo Road in Abbeville; 29429 Veterans Memorial Road in Gueydan; 13531 Gladu Road in Kaplan and at the Public Works building at 2211 Leonie Road in Abbeville.

Couvillon said residents must bring their own shovels and fill the sandbags themselves.

Meanwhile, heavy rain has forced the closure of Tee Robe from Gladu Road heading south, and Kristen Road from La. 13 to Merchant Road.

In St. Martin Parish, residents can fill their own sandbags at the Ruth Bridge Barn at 1035 Ruth Bridge Highway in Breaux Bridge at the parish’s South Barn at 1011 Capritto Forty Arpent in St. Martinville.

Some roads in New Iberia could soon become impassible due to rainfall, authorities said.

New Iberia motorists were advised to steer clear of the 1500 block of East Main Street, the 400 block of Jefferson Terrace Boulevard, West St. Peter Street at Landry Drive, and West Main Street at Chestnut Street.

Iberia Parish residents can find sandbags from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 907 Fulton St., Officials ask that motorists drive into the facility from North Street.

New Iberia city offices closed at 11 a.m. due to the weather.

Closed roads in Iberia Parish include Corrine Street between Robertson Street and West Dale Street; Hebert Street between Hopkins Street and Grey Street; Shot Street at Shelton Avenue; Admiral Doyle Drive between Hopkins Street and St. Jude Street.

Lake Peigneur Road in Iberia Parish also is flooded.
