State Police investigate shooting death of man by Iberia deputy

An Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 33-year-old man who brandished a gun as the deputy responded to a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of Evangeline Street just after 8 p.m. Saturday, State Police Trooper Brooks David said Sunday.

Coty Champagne, of New Iberia, was standing in the doorway of his stepmother’s home with a gun as the deputy approached, David said. After shouting at Champagne to drop the gun, the deputy fired from in front of the house, striking him an unknown number of times, David said. Champagne was later pronounced dead.

His stepmother called the Sheriff’s Office to report that Champagne was damaging property throughout the house, David said. Champagne had been staying with his stepmother for about a week.

Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal requested the Louisiana State Police investigate the incident. No further information was available Saturday.
