Acadiana police blotter for July 12, 2014

A pedestrian walking on the service road in the 2500 block Southeast Evangeline Thruway was struck by two cars Thursday night and killed.

Justin Bradley, 27, of Lafayette, was hit by a northbound 2006 Toyota Corolla, then hit again when he landed in front of a northbound 2000 GMC pickup, Lafayette police Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

Bradley died at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 9:20 p.m.

No one else was injured, and there are no charges pending, Mouton said, noting that the investigation continues.

Police ID pedestrian hit, killed on railroad tracks

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office on Friday released the name of the pedestrian hit and killed by a train this week.

Michael Tanner, 49, died near the Union Pacific train tracks, where he was walking when he was hit at just before noon Thursday, Capt. Megan Vizena said.

Tanner, who was deaf, apparently didn’t know the train was barreling toward him even though the conductor blew the horn.

“We think his disability played a major role in his death,” Vizena said.

Tanner often walked on the tracks near his home in Lebeau.

Vizena said train tracks are the private property of railroad companies, and walking on them is trespassing.

“If you walk on them, if you play on them, if you sit on them, you can be criminally charged,” she said.

Texas man sentenced in sex crime

A man from Zavalla, Texas, was sentenced Friday to 10 years in federal prison after propositioning a police officer posing online as a 14-year-old girl.

Elton Ray Jones, 67, also was ordered by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Foote to undergo five years of supervised release.

After a two-day trial, a jury found Jones guilty of trying to entice a minor — in this case, the undercover officer — to have sex with him, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.

“Jones engaged in explicit conversations and planned a sexual encounter,” Finley said in a news release.

Jones was arrested Oct. 17, 2012, in Lafayette, where he planned the encounter.
