Acadiana police briefs for July 2, 2014

Authorities Tuesday said a 19-year-old Lafayette Parish woman whose body was found next to a roadside on Monday night was the victim of a homicide.

Sheriff’s Office deputies found Valerie West “unconscious and unresponsive” in the 600 block of Gazette Street in north Lafayette Parish at around 10:30 p.m., less than a mile from her home on Madame Germain Street, Capt. Craig Stansbury said in a news release.

Medical personnel were unable to revive the woman.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are considered suspicious and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” Stansbury said.

Authorities have not said if they suspect a specific cause of death.

Police find body in car after two occupants flee

St. Martin Parish authorities said they found a body early Tuesday in a vehicle after others in the car fled following a police pursuit.

St. Martin Parish sheriff’s deputies are investigating the discovery, which was made by St. Martinville police officers who pursued a “suspicious car” after reports of gunshots fired within the city, St. Martin Sheriff’s Maj. Ginny Higgins said in a news release.

“After the vehicle came to an abrupt stop, two black males fled the vehicle on foot,” Higgins said.

City police had responded to shots fired on or near Governor Mouton Street at about 2:30 a.m., then followed the car on to Ledoux Street before the two men ran away, leaving the body of a male inside the car, Higgins said.

Higgins said police do not have information about the age or identity of the victim. He said the males who fled the car have not been caught or identified, Higgins said.

New Iberia man booked in Monday shooting

A New Iberia man was arrested Monday night after an argument earlier that day led to shots fired into an occupied residence, police said.

Deshawn Anthony Davis, 21, was booked into the Iberia Parish jail on counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Richard Fleming said.

At about 5 p.m. Monday, Davis got into an argument with the residents of a home in the 500 block of Fontelieu Drive, after which he pulled a handgun and fired “several shots” into the home, Fleming said, citing witnesses.

No one was injured, he said.

Detectives arrested Davis about four hours later at a home in the 800 block of Francis Street, Fleming said.

Davis remains in the parish jail. His bail was set at $500,000.
