RICHARD BURGESS| firstname.lastname@example.org June 24, 2014 Comments Two suspects have been arrested in the shooting death of off-duty Vermilion Parish sheriff’s deputy Allen Bares, who was killed about 4 p.m. Monday after calling in to report suspicious activity he observed while mowing grass on his day off on South Hospital Drive south of Abbeville. Louisiana State Police Trooper First Class Stephen Hammons announced Tuesday morning the arrests of Quintylan Richard, 20, and Baylon Taylor, 19. Hammons earlier had said Vermilion deputies responding to the Bares’ call found him suffering from gunshot wounds. Bares was transported to Abbeville General Hosptial, where he died from his injuries, Hammons said. Bares had worked for the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office twice, mostly recently since 2006. In between, he worked for a short time for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office. A witness reported seeing a gold Lexus crash into a nearby ditch and two men fleeing the area in the deputy’s pickup truck, according to a news release from the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office. Investigators found the truck abandoned off Miles Street in Abbeville later in the day. Hammons said it has yet to be determined whether the crashed Lexus had any connection to any earlier crimes or incidents in the area. “Certainly, a lot of questions are still to be answered,” he said. Major Darryl LeBlanc of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office said State Police have taken over the investigation. Sheriff Mike Couvillon said in a statement: “It’s a very sad day today, as we lost a veteran brother in law enforcement, a husband, a father and a child.” Couvillon and State Police will speak to journalists about the case at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Office, 407 Charity St. in Abbeville.
