Senate prays for guidance through heavy concerns confronting lawmakers

On the final day of the 2014 legislative session, heavy concerns confronted legislators.

Members of the state Senate took turns Monday praying for a cabinet secretary and colleagues. The prayers sought to bring solace for struggles ranging from a child’s death to health issues.

State Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Suzy Sonnier lost her 13-year-old son over the weekend. Gov. Bobby Jindal said in a statement that he was saddened by his cabinet secretary’s loss.

State Sen. Jody Amedee, R-Gonzales, missed part of the last day of session to be with his 10-year-old son, Lee, who was in a hospital intensive care unit. Lee has been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.

Prayers were said for Mandeville Republican state Sen. Jack Donahue, whose sister is battling cancer. State Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, also has cancer. Senate President John Alario’s daughter Jan soon will undergo surgery to remove a mass on her thyroid. Jan lives with Alario, R-Westwego.
