More study planned for elevator inspection idea

Lawmakers want more study about creating a statewide elevator and escalator inspection system for Louisiana.

The Senate Finance Committee decided Monday to replace Senate Bill 602 by state Sen. Ben Nevers that would establish the inspection system into legislation asking the state fire marshal’s office to look at how such a system would work.

Louisiana doesn’t require regular safety inspections of elevators. Some municipalities have set their own regulations, but most parishes are without rules for annual checkups to make sure elevators and escalators are operating properly.

Senators want more information on what a statewide system could cost and how to pay for it.

Nevers, a Democrat from Bogalusa, didn’t object to further study. His bill would not require annual inspections until 2017.
