Acadiana police briefs for April 17, 2014

Vermilion Parish firefighters who put out a vehicle fire near Maurice early Wednesday discovered two bodies inside, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies responded to the fire about 1 a.m. on Claude Road south of Maurice, Sheriff Mike Couvillon said in a news release.

Couvillon said detectives are working with the Acadiana Crime Lab, the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office and State Police to process the evidence.

He said Vermilion Parish detectives also were working closely with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Couvillon did not release the identities of the victims, or say if they had been identified.

“At this time the deaths are considered suspicious, and updates will be provided as the investigation moves forward,” he said.

Breaux Bridge man held in Iberville killing

St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a Breaux Bridge man in the January killing of an Iberville Parish man, officials said.

Mark A. Roy, 44, was arrested without incident Tuesday at his home, sheriff’s Maj. Ginny Higgins said in a news release.

Roy is accused of killing Avery Hastings, 42, an employee of an environmental company that was doing work at a Plaquemine chemical plant.

Iberville authorities were investigating the theft of an excavator at the plant in Plaquemine. During the investigation they discovered Avery’s body in a field in Rosedale, a few miles north of Plaquemine, Higgins said.

Higgins did not state a date for the theft or the homicide.

Roy was arrested as a result of the investigation, Higgins said.

Roy was transported to Iberville Parish and booked on one count of second-degree murder and principal to felony theft.

Crowley man accused of stealing crawfish

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries agents this week arrested a Crowley man accused of stealing crawfish from traps in an Acadia Parish pond, Acadia Sheriff Wayne Melancon said.

Jason Paul Mire, 39, of the 2700 block of Crowley Eunice Highway near Crowley, faces up to 10 years in prison at hard labor and a fine up to $3,000, Melancon said in a news release.

Melancon said state wildlife agents saw Mire in a crawfish pond that does not belong to him. The arrest, aided by sheriff’s deputies, occurred at the site of the alleged thefts on Crowley Eunice Highway near Mire’s home.

He said his office has received numerous complaints of theft from crawfish farmers parishwide.

Man fleeing police crashes into home

Carencro police on Wednesday were searching for the driver of a Chevrolet truck who fled from police, crashed into a Sherwood Street home in Lafayette, then escaped on foot, Carencro Police Chief Carlos Stout said.

The truck’s driver, Oliver Jonathon Martin, 30, is wanted on speeding, aggravated flight from an officer and other counts, Stout said in a news release.

He said Martin’s home is listed as 207 Sherwood St., just a few houses from the one he crashed into at 236 Sherwood St. Stout said the chase and crash occurred about noon Wednesday.

The chase started on Hector Connolly Road in Carencro and ended on Sherwood Street, near Louisiana Avenue.

Martin was the sole occupant of the older model truck and was chased on foot by a Carencro police officer for several blocks before getting away, Stout said.
