Jazz Fest 'cubes' released

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival announced its much-anticipated cubes Tuesday. The easy-to-read, cube-format schedule contains performance times and stages for the seven days of Jazz Fest. See the cubes here.

Because there’s so much music to choose from at Jazz Fest, the cubes help festivalgoers navigate their way from stage to stage at the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Festival officials revealed the cubes in the paddock area of the Fair Grounds during the Jazz Fest’s annual “month-out” press party. The official 2014 Jazz Fest poster and Congo Square posters were also unveiled.

Jazz Fest runs April 25-April 27 and May 1-May 4 at the Fair Grounds. The Jazz Fest iPhone and Android apps are available at http://www.nojazzfest.com/multimedia/jazz-festival-app.

Performers at the 45th Jazz Fest include Bruce Springsteen in his third appearance at the festival and rock star Eric Clapton in his Jazz Fest debut. Also appearing are rhythm-and-blues star Robin Thicke, pop star Christina Aguilera, jam band Phish, Canadian modern-rock group Arcade Fire and former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant in his third Jazz Fest appearance.

The festival’s classic-rock lineup is especially heavy this year. In addition to British stars Plant and Clapton, returning American stars Santana and former Creedence Clearwater Revival front man John Fogerty are on the bill.

The 45th anniversary Jazz Fest poster, created by Terrance Osborne, depicts the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The band celebrated its 50th anniversary last year by touring the world, making many TV appearances and releasing its first album of all-original material.

The Jazz Fest’s 2014 Congo Square poster, by Richard Thomas, presents four images of classic R&B singer Ernie K-Doe. One of New Orleans’ most colorful performers and personalities, K-Doe’s biggest hit, “Mother-In-Law,” reached No. 1 in 1961. The Historic New Orleans Collection published Ben Sandmel’s biography of K-Doe, “Ernie K-Doe: The R&B Emperor of New Orleans,” in 2012.
