Greenwell Springs man dies in 1-car accident
Driving too fast while talking on a cellphone may have contributed to a single-car accident that killed a Greenwell Springs man Tuesday morning, Baton Rouge police said.
Johnny Kemp, 29, 5121 Parkin Ave., was identified as the man who died in the accident on South Choctaw Drive near North Flannery Road, police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola said.
The crash occurred about 8:20 a.m. when Kemp’s Ford 150 pickup flipped while he was trying to drive around a curve.
The truck ran off the road, through a parking lot and into a ditch, partially ejecting the driver, Coppola said.
Pizza delivery robbery ends in suspect’s arrest
A 20-year-old man accused of robbing a pizza delivery man Monday and getting away with $60 has been arrested.
Telvin Robertson, 2947 Joyce Drive, Baton Rouge, was booked into Parish Prison early Tuesday on counts of armed robbery, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Robertson, armed with a handgun, walked up to the victim in the 2000 block of North Lobdell Drive and stole about $60 before fleeing in a small blue Mazda, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Police pulled Robertson over, found he matched the description given by the victim and found some of the money inside the car with four small bags of marijuana, the affidavit said.
Raid leads to arrest, suspected heroin, gun
East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies raided a home on North Ridgewood Drive on Monday, tackled a man inside before he could grab a semi-automatic handgun and found several packets of heroin, syringes and military-grade body armor, an affidavit says.
Roderick D. Poindexter, 28, 9147 N. Ridgewood Drive, and Breanne Nicole Beasley, 17, 6739 W. Flintridge Place, were both booked into Parish Prison on counts of illegal possession of body armor, possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession of Schedule IV drugs, possession of a gun with a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Poindexter also was booked on possession of a firearm by felon and obstruction of justice.
When the SWAT team executed a search warrant on the home with police dogs, Poindexter ran to the back of the home and went for a loaded semi-automatic handgun before deputies tackled him, the affidavit of probable cause said.
Before he went for the gun, deputies saw Poindexter throw several bags of heroin into a hole in the bathroom, the affidavit said.
When questioned if there were drugs in the home, Poindexter said no, the affidavit said.
Sixth arrest made in drug ring investigation
A former clinic worker accused of participating in a large-scale prescription drug ring and filling three prescriptions for Roxicodone at a local pharmacy was arrested Monday.
Garilyn Sue Guillot, 41, 213 Lucky St., Plattenville, was booked into Parish Prison on three counts of insurance fraud and obtaining a controlled dangerous substance by fraud.
Guillot is one of six people who have been arrested for their alleged participation is a drug ring that involved the Louisiana Spine and Sport Medicine clinic from August 2008 to December 2013, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
The supposed mastermind behind the operation, Christopher Armstrong, a physician’s assistant, is accused of writing almost 400 fraudulent prescriptions for prescription drugs such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, the affidavit said.
Guillot, who was employed at the clinic, was identified by a pharmacist at the Walgreen’s on Essen Lane as having filled out three fraudulent prescriptions for Roxicodone between February 2013 and June 2013, the affidavit said.
Authorities book seven on suspicion of DWI
Authorities arrested at least seven people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Monday and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.
Those booked and the counts against them:
- Corey Brannon, 21, 2326 N. Magnolia Drive, Baker, first-offense DWI, improper turn and driving left of center.
- Matthew Darouse, 22, 5164 Stones River Ave., Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, driving over median, improper lane usage and reckless operation.
- David Foshee, 24, 2502 McGrath Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, improper turn, stop sign/yield sign violation and reckless operation.
- Jason Hogue, 20, 4915 Cristal Ridge Lane, Missouri City, Texas, first-offense DWI, careless operation and failure to maintain control.
- Selvin Nunez Rosales, 36, exact address not given, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, possession of alcoholic beverage in vehicle and careless operation.
- John Shackelford, 28, 5802 Lake Shadow Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, failure to maintain control and reckless operation.
- Natalie Vidrine, 22, 12445 Parkvilla Ave., Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI and disobeying a red light.
