Police still investigating Sunday night incident; no suspects identified
Baker police detectives are investigating a Sunday night shooting just north of Groom Road that left one man dead.
The shooting happened about 6:25 p.m. in the 1300 block of Daniels Street, Baker Police Chief Mike Knaps said.
Kortlon Trevon Johnson, 19, 251 Dotson St., Baton Rouge, died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, Knaps said.
Police did not identify any suspects in Johnson’s death late Sunday, and no other details about what led to shooting were available.
Larb Singleton Jr., Johnson’s stepfather, said he did not know what brought his stepson to the Daniels Street residence Sunday night.
Singleton also said his stepson’s girlfriend is pregnant with Johnson’s child.
“He was so proud of that,” Singleton said. “Took a life away before he got a chance to see the baby.”
Singleton described his stepson as a good-mannered young man.
“He was a good boy,” who Singleton said may have gotten tangled up with the wrong crowd.
It wasn’t the first time Singleton had a son shot to death.
About five years ago, Larb Singleton III, 23, was fatally shot in Zion City, and in February 2011 Jonathan Jones, who was 16 at the time of the October 2008 shooting, was convicted of second-degree murder in Larb Singleton III’s death.
Baker police ask anyone with information about the Sunday night shooting to call them at (225) 775-6000 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
