.38-caliber gun fired; man nearby wounded
A 25-year-old man was arrested late Sunday after a .38-caliber handgun he held went off and the bullet hit a man in the head.
Edwin Jamal Johnson, 6027 San Juan Drive, Baton Rouge, was booked into Parish Prison on negligent injuring.
The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening, the affidavit of probable cause said.
Johnson told police it was an accident and that he was alone in the vehicle when the gun went off, the affidavit said.
Monday morning fire damages apartment
A fire early Monday burned through the roof on one side of an apartment at 5323 Blair Lane, the St. George Fire Protection District reported.
The call came at 4:20 a.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:29 a.m. and had the fire under control by 4:40 a.m., Assistant Fire Chief Chad Roberson said.
In addition to the roof damage, the apartment received heavy smoke and water damage, he said, estimating the value of the damage as $50,000 or more.
The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the family, he said.
Police arrest man, 30, in Italian eatery theft
A man accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of specialty meat from an Italian restaurant Thursday, then raiding a neighboring pawn shop two days later, has been arrested.
Luis Carlos Flores, 30, 10530 Florida Blvd. No. 412, Baton Rouge, was booked into Parish Prison on Sunday on three counts of simple burglary, prison records show.
Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. said Monday that Flores broke into Anthony’s Italian Deli, 10248 Florida Blvd., through the front door Thursday and stole meat and other items.
On Saturday, he dropped into American Pawn, 10224 Florida Blvd., through the roof and stole several items, including computers, an iPhone and a shotgun, Coppola said.
Flores was caught on surveillance cameras in both businesses and police also got witness statements to implicate Flores, Coppola said.
During questioning, detectives realized Flores had similar characteristics, such as a similar build and a large tattoo on his forearm, of a person who burglarized an Auto Zone store on Aug. 13, Coppola said.
Flores’ roommates watched surveillance video from the Auto Zone with detectives and told them that it was Flores in the footage, Coppola said.
Three suspects booked into prison on DWI
Authorities arrested at least three people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 2:30 p.m. Monday, booking records show.
Those booked and the counts against them:
- Michael Ferry, 38, 10175 High Pines Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, flight from an officer, possession of alcohol in the vehicle, aggravated obstruction of public highway, reckless operation and resisting an officer.
- Derek Maher, 34, 20035 Sallie Drive, Plaquemine, first-offense DWI, commercial vehicles registration exemption, registration of motor vehicles, careless operation and possession of drug paraphernalia.
- Legarick Taylor, 25, 12718 Canterbury Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, speeding, fugitive warrant and driver’s license suspended/revoked.
