Acadiana briefs for Dec. 25, 2013

Free program teaches students gardening

Free cabbage plants are available to third-grade teachers through the National Bonnie Plants Third-Grade Cabbage Program.

Teachers can register for the program at http://bonniecab bageprogram.com and 2-inch plants will be delivered in the spring. Teachers distribute the plants and provide instructions to students to grow the plants at home. At the end of each season, teachers select a winner based on size, appearance and maturity.

Classroom winners are entered into a state contest with a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship.
