CARENCRO — Carencro police rearrested a man suspected of driving drunk and without headlights, then crashing into another vehicle Saturday night that was carrying a pregnant woman whose fetus did not survive the trauma, officials said.
Luis Alfredo Ortiz, 26, was arrested again Thursday while he was at Delta Downs in Calcasieu Parish. He was booked on one count of first-degree negligent injury, an upgrade from the previous booking for alleged hit-and-run driving, Carencro Police Chief Carlos Stout said in a news release.
Stout said Ortiz admitted to investigators that he drank beer and tequila from 11 a.m. that Saturday up to the time of the accident at 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Gloria Switch Road.
After the crash, Ortiz ran from the accident scene without offering help to those who were hurt, Stout said.
Lafayette Parish District Attorney Mike Harson’s office is reviewing the case. The woman hurt in the crash was 6 to 7 months pregnant, and the fetus died after doctors performed a Cesarean birth, Stout said.
Ortiz is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on $30,000 bond.
