  • Advocate staff photo by TRAVIS SPRADLING.-- New Orleans resident and New Iberia native George Rodrigue, creator of the famous 'Blue Dog' paintings, puts the final touches on one he painted Thursday at The Dufroc School, as part of a program in partnership with the Baton Rouge community group Forum 35. The George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts and Forum 35 also presented an 'Arts Closet Kit,' with art supplies valued at $2,000, to help the school have an arts program. Rodrigue painted a Blue Dog for the kids, then watched as they tried their own, with help from teachers and Forum 35 members. The Blue Dog was created by Rodrigue to illustrate the 'loup-garou,' a werewolf-type dog, for a 1984 book ('Bayou') of Cajun ghost stories. After he began adding the dog to his paintings of Louisiana cemetery and bayou scenes, Rodrigue watched the popularity of 'Blue Dog' soar. He was named the Artist Laureate for Louisiana in 2008 by Gov. Bobby Jindal.
