New Orleans was named one of the 21 must-see destinations in the world by National Geographic Traveler in the magazine’s December 2013/January 2014.

“New Orleans, like Rome or hope, is eternal. Visit Louisiana’s filigreed, fleur-de-lis city twice or 20 times, and the scent will be as unchanging as the air is unmoving: a humid mix of confederate jasmine and fried shrimp, diesel fuel and desire,” the magazine says.

New Orleans was one of two destinations in the United States on the list. Rock Mountain Park, Colo., was the other.

The must-see list reflects “the most exceptional” destinations in the travel world, according to National Geographic Traveler.
