Shooting at townhouse on Ridge Pecan leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

An early morning shooting in a south Baton Rouge townhouse complex Wednesday left one man dead and another injured.

The shooting occurred between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday in a townhouse at 9143 Ridge Pecan Drive, off Burbank Drive near Elvin Drive, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

She said the person killed was Jared Christopher Vincent, 22, of 9143 Ridge Pecan Drive.

Detectives recently began conducting an undercover investigation at the complex after receiving tips about drug deals, Hicks said.

“This investigation is ongoing, as is the murder investigation,” she said.

The man who was wounded suffered serious injuries, but was expected to survive, Hicks said.

Investigators about 9 a.m. could be seen walking around the parking lot in front of the apartment where the shooting occurred, collecting and photographing evidence.

One neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said he was jolted awake at about 4:45 a.m. by loud noises and gunshots coming from a nearby apartment.

“I heard some stuff banging like around, sounded like someone was throwing stuff or running into stuff,” he said. “Not too long after that, there were several shots fired, then a pause, then a few more shots fired.”

He said the resident who was injured ran around the parking lot, screaming for a phone. Soon after that, he said, deputies arrived on the scene.

Another neighbor, Kathleen Abernathy, said she’s been living near the victims since May and suspected they were selling drugs out of their townhouse.

She said people were coming and going to their apartment at all hours of the night, sometimes several at once, and there was a strong smell of marijuana coming from their townhouse.

She said she once counted 13 vehicles stopping by the townhome in a one-hour span.
