LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette man struck by a westbound Amtrak train Monday has died from his injuries, Lafayette police reported.
Mckensey J. Portalis, 59, was trying to cross the railroad tracks at North Loop Street around 12:30 p.m. Monday when he was hit, Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.
Portalis, who was thrown 50 feet by the impact, was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later died. There were no injuries on the passenger train.
Witnesses told police that all the warning devices at the crossing were operating correctly, Mouton said.
An investigation continues.
