Thibodaux man dies in head-on crash in Raceland

A 21-year-old Thibodaux man died Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on La. 182 in Raceland, State Police said.

The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Andrew Carter, 21, dead after the Chevrolet Malibu he was riding in crossed the centerline of La. 182, also known as Rodeo Drive, and struck an oncoming Volvo V50 around 3 p.m., said Trooper First Class Evan Harrell, a State Police spokesman.

Carter was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Harrell said.

The drivers of both vehicles — both wearing seat belts during the crash — were taken to Thibodaux Regional Hospital with severe injuries, Harrell said.

Alfred Carter IV, 24, of Thibodaux, was driving the Chevrolet in Raceland, southeast of Thibodaux, when for unknown reasons the car crossed into oncoming traffic.

The car struck the Volvo driven by Loraine Bourgeois, 65, of Metairie.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to be a factor in the crash, Harrell said, but toxicology reports from both drivers are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
