Witnesses: Pair running through traffic when hit by gunfire
A bloodstain on the side of Airline Highway marked the spot where a woman and a 7-year old child were shot Wednesday afternoon in the middle of rush hour traffic, a brazen act of violence that New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said was the result of an earlier dispute in the Hollygrove neighborhood.
The girl was shot in the face, police said.
The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Both were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Serpas said the shooting happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. at Palmetto Street and Airline Highway.
According to witnesses, the pair were running across Airline when they were cut down by gunfire.
Darren Williams, who lives on Palmetto a block from the shooting site, said he was returning to his house when he heard a volley of gunshots and saw the woman and girl collapse on the ground.
“The little girl just seemed like she was in shock,” he said.
Williams said that another woman, who he believed was accompanying the girl but not the second victim, appeared to be having a seizure.
Traffic was blocked as police officers investigated a crime scene that stretched across both sides of Airline.
Under the Palmetto overpass, a hundred yards away from a playground, close to a dozen green markers littered the ground where shell casings lay.
Serpas said police think the shooter or shooters were on foot.
He said he was hopeful that leads from the many bystanders on the scene would help investigators in making fast progress on the case.
