DENHAM SPRINGS — Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested an 18-year-old man Sunday in the shooting death of a Baton Rouge teen, the Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
Joel Orozco, 30578 Cypress Ridge, Denham Springs, was booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center on a count of second-degree murder, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lori Steele said in a news release.
Orozco, who remained jailed Monday afternoon, is accused of shooting David Nguyen, 17, of Baton Rouge.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office asked the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office to help find Nguyen, who was last seen Saturday morning, Steele said. Nguyen’s mother reported him missing.
Detectives’ investigation led them to Orozco, who said Sunday that he shot and killed Nguyen, Steele said.
Orozco led investigators to Clearwater Drive in Denham Springs where authorities found Nguyen’s body, Steele said.
Investigators gathered evidence from the crime scene and Orozco’s home, she said.
Bail was set $150,000, according to parish jail records.
A motive in the shooting was unclear as of Monday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing, Steele said.
