Advocate to continue Southern coverage

Rough start, disparaging comment lead to change

“The purpose of (the new media restrictions) was, until we get a better handle and the team does stuff internally to kind of discipline what took place last week and get guys to understand it’s not what we want at the program, it’s going to be those three guys (who will be available). Now as each week progresses, it will change.” CHRIS JONES, Southern sports information director

In a story Wednesday on the topic of the Southern University football team’s new media restriction, The Advocate said that policy would cause the newspaper to give “minimal” coverage to Southern football. Much of a newspaper’s sports coverage depends on being able to interview players.

The Advocate will offer the fullest coverage possible within the constraints of the university’s policy, which Southern says is temporary and was prompted by a player’s comments disparaging Northwestern State before last week’s game.
