East Ascension Hospital will auction materials, equipment

Ascension Parish government will auction materials and equipment from the defunct East Ascension Hospital at 10 a.m. Sunday in advance of plans to demolish the old building, officials said Monday.

Materials include commercial kitchen equipment, medical equipment, furniture, wooden doors, stainless steel cabinets, industrial machinery and other materials, parish officials said in a news release.

Parish officials have discussed plans to build a new parish government complex on the site of the old hospital at 615 E. Worthy St., Gonzales, across the street from East Ascension High School.

Last year, the Parish Council dissolved the hospital’s old governing board and pocketed its assets, including $5 million in surplus funds, as hospital officials struggled to keep the old building leased and turn a profit.

Built in 1967, the 80,000-square-foot building had not be used as a traditional hospital in several years as the now dissolved hospital board had leased the space to various medical tenants, including long-term acute care and geriatric psychiatry providers.

Brown’s Auction Co. of Lafayette will conduct the Sunday auction both at the hospital and on the Internet.

Medical, kitchen and industrial items only will be offered online at the auctioneer’s website, www.brownsauction.com.

General items will be sold at the live on-site auction, parish officials said.

Bidders can inspect auction items from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Winning bidders must remove their purchased items from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Sept. 18.
