HUNTER| Special to The Advocate Aug. 21, 2013 Comments PLAQUEMINE — The Iberville Parish Council put mobile home park, recreational vehicle park and apartment complex owners on a 30-day notice Tuesday night that they are responsible for providing adequate trash containers for their residents or there will be consequences. For several months, the parish has been battling at least two mobile home parks that are littered with trash, so the council amended the parish’s code requiring the containers. Owners in violation will be served a written notice and if they don’t provide dumpsters within seven days, the parish will provide one and bill the owners, according to the ordinance. If that bill is not paid within 30 days the cost will be added to their taxes. If their taxes go unpaid, then a lien will be put against their property. In a related move, Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso Jr. asked the council to hold a hearing at its Sept. 17 meeting to abandon a portion of Bayou Road in the Maringouin area that is being used as an illegal trash dump. Council members were presented with a stack of photos showing what looked like at least several pickup loads of household trash and clothing tossed between the edge of the road and a cane field. “I’m tired of cleaning it up,” Ourso said. “It’s a big, big liability to the parish.” Other issues taken up by the council included: ALLIGATOR BAYOU: Ourso reported the parish is taking the owner of Alligator Bayou to court to expropriate three-tenths of an acre of land, “about the size of this room,” he said, the parish needs to maintain a nearby flood-control lock. “All efforts at negotiations have broken down,” Ourso said, and announced the case will be in court on Sept. 25. AUDIT REPORT: Auditor Margaret Pritchard, of Baxley & Associates LLC, reviewed an audit of the parish’s $35 million budget and reported that Iberville “is in a nice, healthy position,” regarding positive account balances. FLOOD MAPS: The council decided public hearings will be held before the next meeting, Sept. 17, regarding an ordinance adopting the new Federal Emergency Management Agency flood map rules, an ordinance about how livestock, such as horses and cows, can be kept, and an ordinance to clarify the speed limit at 20 mph on Barrow Street.
