Men killed in Harvey were Southern students

Two men gunned down in Harvey late Tuesday night were students at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

Nikiayh Westerfield, 19, of Westwego, and Dave Harrison, 19, of Gretna, were enrolled in the spring semester, confirmed Ed Pratt, assistant to the chancellor for media relations.

Both had registered for the fall, he added.

Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies responded about 11:58 p.m. to reports of gunshots in the 4000 block of Paige Jeanette Drive in the Woodmere subdivision and found the men in a Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators have not named any suspects in the case.

Police obtain warrant for alleged gunman

New Orleans police have obtained an arrest warrant for second-degree murder for a man accused of a shooting Wednesday evening in Central City.

Police allege Terrance Carter, 35, shot a 36-year-old man about 5:45 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Robertson Street. The man was in guarded condition Thursday at a local hospital, said officer Frank Robertson, a police spokesman.

Anyone with information about Carter’s whereabouts is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

Deputy arrested in malfeasance

An Orleans Parish sheriff’s deputy was suspended without pay after he was arrested in allegedly bringing contraband into the parish jail, Sheriff Marlin Gusman said Thursday.

Deputy Bryson Baptiste, who has been employed by the OPSO for the last year, was booked with four counts of malfeasance in office and four counts of introduction of contraband into a jail, Gusman said.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Gusman did not released any other information.

“The sheriff’s office does not tolerate contraband in our facilities, no matter how it may have been introduced,” Gusman said in a prepared statement.

Woman cuts, pours bleach on boyfriend

A man was cut in the head and had bleach poured in his face late Wednesday during an argument with his girlfriend, New Orleans police said.

The 56-year-old victim and the woman, whom police did not identify, got into an argument in a home in the 2800 block of South Johnson Street in Central City about 11:25 p.m.

During the argument, according to police, the girlfriend pushed down the victim, hit him in the head with a picture frame, cutting him in the head, and poured bleach in his face.
