Home Depot in Gonzales is hosting hurricane preparedness and storm safety workshops Saturday.

The event is part of a companywide program in storm-prone states from Texas to Maine.

The mayor, along with personnel from State Police, fire departments, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and the Office of Emergency Preparedness, as well as Baton Rouge meteorologist Jay Grymes, are expected to attend.

The store also will hold children’s workshops and serve free food.

The workshops will offer information on hurricane readiness topics such as storm preparation projects, generator safety, sizing generators for specific home or business needs and assembling disaster preparedness kits.

St. Amant road closure

The state Department of Transportation and Development is closing La. 431 just north of St. Amant High School at 7 a.m. Saturday to remove and replace a cross drain pipe under the road.

The road is expected to reopen at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Signs will be in place identifying alternative routes.

FFA holding garage sale

The St. Amant High School Future Farmers of America club will hold a garage sale Friday and Saturday inside the school cafeteria.

The club will sell a variety of items and sweets from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Hospital plans classes

The St. Elizabeth Hospital Community Education Department’s Loss and Grief Education and Support meetings are set on Aug. 1, Aug. 8, Aug. 15, Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 at the hospital’s Sister Vernola conference room.

The free meetings are held at 7 p.m.

The hospital will host a Total Joint Replacement Education Class at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 5 in the Sister Linda conference room. Anyone considering knee or hip replacement surgery is invited to attend.

Kidsfest plans underway

St. Elizabeth Physicians and its Diabetes Education Program are planning Kidsfest: A Day of Health and Wellness Just for Kids.

The program will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center gym. Families and children of all ages are welcome.

In addition to a 1K Fun Run for families, there will also be more than 25 interactive exhibits showcasing organizations and services throughout the parish, free children’s health screenings, a marketplace featuring specialty children’s items, demonstrations and presentations and a “get moving” activity area.

Complimentary tickets for the free event are available at all St. Elizabeth Physicians Clinics, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Ascension Parish primary and middle schools and area businesses.

Limited booth and vendor spaces are still available.
