Fire investigation leads to meth lab arrest in Amite

Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a 35-year-old man Tuesday accused of operating a methamphetamine lab that exploded at his home on Old McMichael Road in Amite.

Jacob Cruse was booked on counts of operation, creation or possession of a clandestine lab and simple arson, according to a Sheriff’s Office account of the incident issued Wednesday.

The Amite Fire Department contacted the Sheriff’s Office on June 11 to help investigate a fire on Old McMichael Road.

Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives, as well as the Tri-Parish Narcotics Task Force and state Fire Marshal’s Office officials, also helped investigate the fire because of a strong odor coming from the home.

Cruse eventually told detectives he was trying to make meth using the “one-pot method” when a “catastrophic failure occurred,” causing a fire that burned the entire structure.
