Hit-and-run driver sought in St. Helena highway death

Investigators are searching for the driver of a pickup believed to have struck and killed a 21-year-old pedestrian early Saturday on La. 43 in St. Helena Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

William Iasigi, 21, of Liberty, Miss., died Saturday at a hospital shortly after being struck by what investigators described as a light-colored, Chevrolet or GMC pickup that’s now missing a passenger’s side rear-view mirror, State Police Troop L reported in a news release.

Iasigi was driving a 2008 Chevrolet pickup south just north of Greensburg when, for unknown reasons, Iasigi stopped the truck in the lane of travel on La. 43 and got out of the vehicle, the release says.

Soon after, the unidentified vehicle struck Iasigi and the open door of his pickup, then left the scene, the release says.

A passenger in Iasigi’s vehicle, Jarrett Wilson, 23, of Osyka, Miss., and another pedestrian in the vicinity of the crash, Thomas Bailey, transported Iasigi to a hospital, the release says.

Iasigi was pronounced dead at 5:05 a.m., the release says.

The hit-and-run incident remains under investigation, and anyone with information about the case is asked to contact State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250.
