May is Better Hearing and Speech Month. The screenings will be available during open houses at the center from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The community is invited to attend, and registration is not required. Speech pathologists will conduct the screenings and be available to answer questions about speech or language disorders and healthy communication for children and adults. Rosedown up close Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site in St. Francisville offers a May 18 “behind the scenes” tour of two areas usually off-limits to visitors, the attic of the main house and the production greenhouse used to maintain and cultivate plants displayed in the gardens. Both areas are not generally open to the public, and the site manager said the tour is a rare opportunity to see things normally viewed only by the site’s staff. The tour will begin at 10 a.m. at the front porch of the main house. Admission is $10 for adults ages 18-61, $8 for seniors 62 and older, and $4 for students 6-17. A tour of the garden only is $5. Teachers honored The Rotary Club of St. Francisville recognized West Feliciana Parish’s teachers of the year at a Tuesday meeting. They are Catherine Landry, Bains Elementary School; Amanda Harris, West Feliciana Middle School; and Mark Lester, West Feliciana High School. Farmers market open The Farmers Market in St. Francisville is now open from 9 a.m. until noon Thursdays. The market is in the old fair barn behind the Fred’s store and near the water tower. Safe homes for kids Catholic Charities invites Zachary residents to join Safe Families for Children at an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 20 at First Baptist Church’s Education Building banquet hall, 4200 Main St. Safe Families for Children offers a temporary sanctuary in host homes to children whose families are in crisis but who don’t need foster care. It also offers support services to parents and helps reduce the potential for abuse and neglect. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge brought the movement to the Baton Rouge area more than a year ago at the request of Casey Family Programs.
