Shooting on Interstate 10 kills one, injures another

Police: Dark-colored vehicle flees area

A shooting early Monday morning on Interstate 10 killed one man and sent another to a local hospital, police said.

The shooting happened about 2:55 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the interstate at the Metairie Road and City Park Avenue exit. It closed the roadway for nearly three hours, said officer Frank Robertson, a New Orleans Police Department spokesman.

Third District officers responding to a call of shots fired on the interstate found two men shot inside a silver Nissan Maxima. Paramedics rushed the men to Interim LSU Public Hospital.

The passenger, 25-year-old Travis Thomas, died from his injuries about 4 a.m., said John Gagliano, the Orleans Parish coroner’s chief investigator. The 23-year-old driver’s injuries were not serious, Robertson said.

While police are still trying to identify a motive and suspects in the shooting, investigators are looking for a dark-colored vehicle that was seen leaving the scene and headed toward the I-10 North Causeway Boulevard in Metairie, Robertson said. No other description of the vehicle was provided.

While the interstate was closed after the shooting, it reopened about 5:40 a.m.

Homicide Detective Wayne Delarge is leading the investigation. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (504) 822-1111 or (877) 903-7867.
