Battle of New Orleans commemorative plates bill advances

Louisiana drivers will start seeing new license plates on private cars and trucks next year commemorating the series of skirmishes during the war of 1812 commonly known as the “Battle of New Orleans.”

House Concurrent Resolution 67 sponsored by state Rep. Nick Lorusso, R-New Orleans passed 92-0 in the state House Thursday.

The plates will have a design commemorating the battle in place of the pelican on current license plates. The words: “Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial 1815-2015” will appear at the bottom of the design replacing “Sportsman’s Paradise” that appears on most plates now.

The state Department of Public Safety and Corrections will issue the plates between Jan. 2, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2015.

The Battle of New Orleans was the last armed conflict between the U.S. and Great Britain. During the conflict, Louisiana citizens are credited with facilitating the westward expansion of the country.
