Man on stolen motorcycle dies in crash fleeing from St. Tammany deputies Man on stolen motorcycle dies in crash fleeing from St. Tammany deputies Advocate staff report May 01, 2013 Comments COVINGTON — A man died Sunday afternoon on Interstate 12 trying to outrun police on a stolen motorcycle, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said. Deputies saw the motorcycle, reported stolen from the Covington Autoplex, about 2 p.m. Sunday on La. 190 near Covington and began following the cyclist, Capt. George Bonnett said in a news release. The man, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family, turned onto I-12 west, then exited the interstate at the La. 1077 exit before turning back onto the interstate, traveling east, Bonnett said. Deputies received numerous 911 calls about the stolen motorcycle from other motorists, Bonnett said. Because of traffic conditions and the speed of motorcycle, deputies could not get near the fleeing cyclist and were about to call off the chase when the driver tried to pass a vehicle on the inside shoulder of the interstate and lost control, Bonnett said. The cyclist slammed into the protective cables in the median between the east and westbound lanes and died from his injuries, Bonnett said. No one else was involved in the crash and the man had no prior criminal history, Bonnett said.
