NOPD: Man dies in park

Police late Thursday were investigating the fatal shooting of a man at 6 p.m. near Prentiss Avenue and Providence Place in Pontchartrain Park near the railroad tracks.

A person in the area told police he thought he heard fireworks and when he investigated, he found the victim, whose identity has not been released yet, lying face down, police spokesman Officer Frank B. Robertson III said in a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The person who found the body told a police officer who lives nearby and the officer found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds and unresponsive, Robertson said.

The investigation is ongoing and officers are still looking for a motive, Robertson said.

Pontchartrain Park is a neighborhood with a park in the middle of it. The railroad tracks are behind the residential area; hence, the victim died in Pontchartrain Park, the neighborhood; he was not shot "in a park." Just some clarification by a New Orleanian
