Second cyclist struck by hit-and-run driver in Ascension

Ascension Parish law enforcement authorities on Thursday searched for the second time in three-day span for a hit-and-run driver accused of striking a bicycle rider.

A 26-year-old man riding east on La. 42 received minor injuries Thursday when he was hit by a passing truck, Lt. Col. Bobby Webre of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Authorities discovered a piece of the passenger-side mirror at Thursday’s scene and identified the vehicle as a 2011 white Ford F-150 Lariat.

The La. 42 incident occurred just two days after a 49-year-old Prairieville bicycle rider was struck and killed on La. 44 by a hit-and-run driver of an unknown vehicle.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office at (225) 621-4636, Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867 or Louisiana State Police at (225) 754-8500.

Whatnow! Thanks for insight. Your right we should teach drivers how to drive better. I think there should be drivers courses that cost about $500 and if you don't take it you don't drive (you would have to actually pass it too). That would get rid of a lot of dumbassery! As far as the money tree yeah it is time some money was spent on roads. For christ sake I don't mean every road in the parish dude, but a few bike lanes in some key areas would be nice. And louisianared your right biker's need to obey the rules of the road too. BTW has anybody been caught yet?

I have no problems with bikers when they obey the law, but they have no idea what the laws are concerning bicycle riders. Bicyclists, here are a few rules that my parents taught me when I was 7 years old. 1. You have to stop at stop signs and signals 2. You have to use hand signals when you stop or make a turn. 3. You have the same rights to be on the road as vehicles, which means you have to obey the same laws. Maybe if everyone would have to get a license to ride a bike, they would have to take a test to make them aware of the Rules of the Road for cars and bikes.

How about we teach drivers not to hit bike riders and run away? Sure, let just go to the good old money tree and widen roads and make bike paths for all those bike riders out there.

Riding a bike on any road in Ascension Parish is like playing Russian Roulette. It is high time Roads are widened and bike lanes put in around key areas in Ascension.
