Man on bicycle killed in fatal accident in Ascension

A Prairieville man was killed Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run incident when a passing vehicle struck the bicycle he was riding on Black Bayou Road.

Frank J. Bercegeay, 49, of Prairieville, was pedaling on the road east of La. 44 when struck by the unidentified vehicle, Louisiana State Police announced in a news release. Bercegeay was thrown into a roadside ditch where he died.

A pedestrian walking along Black Bayou Road, also called La. 934, later in the morning noticed Bercegeay in the ditch and notified authorities.

State Police began investigating the incident around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday , State Police spokesman Jared Sandifer said.

It’s unknown if Bercegeay was impaired, but toxicology results are pending an autopsy. He was wearing a reflective vest, Sandifer said.

Investigators haven’t been able to determine what type of vehicle struck Bercegeay, Sandifer said, but they believe the vehicle will possibly have damage to the right side or passenger mirror.

Troopers ask anyone with information about the case to contact Louisiana State Police Troop A at (225) 754-8500, or their local law enforcement agency.

Does anyone know Droop's real name? I always wondered.

Even if the driver didn't know hit somebody (yeah right), he/she would still be at fault. 100% at fault. This is terrible. This is the 2nd hit and run fatality this year involving cyclists. There have been several involving pedestrians. Motorists need to pay attention. They sit in their metal and glass bubbles, listening to music, eating, doing their makeup, texting, all the while not realizing that one small mistake could mean someone's life.

Someone on the radio did bring up a good point this morning. Andn ot saying it is what happened or didn't happen, but it is a possibility. Maybe the driver had a boat trailer or something attached to his car/truck. The trailer could have hit the bike and the drive would almost never know. Let's not jump to conclusions here. Seems every time a biker gets hit, the driver of the car is automatically 100% at fault. We do not know the facts. My thoughts and prayers go out to the biker and his family.

I looked on The Creole FB page, and a lot of people said it wasn't Droop, that they'd seen him riding around hours after this accident. I hope they catch the driver. Horrible.
