Slidell woman struck, killed by freight train

A freight train and an automobile collided at a grade crossing Friday night, killing a 53-year-old Slidell woman, the Slidell Police Department reported Saturday.

Jamii F. Pizzitolo, for unknown reasons, turned north onto some railroad tracks in her 2004 gold Oldsmobile Alero and was struck by the southbound train at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said in a news release.

The collision occurred at Front Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Seuzeneau said.

Pizzitolo was extracted from her car and airlifted to University Hospital, where she died from her injuries, Seuzeneau said.

Police said toxicology tests will be made as part of the investigation into the crash, Seuzeneau said.
