Advocate story March 13, 2013 Comments Inmate escapes from temporary facility NEW ORLEANS — Authorities searched on Saturday for an Orleans Parish Prison inmate who escaped late Friday from a temporary housing tent on the grounds of the facility, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Saturday. A sheriff’s deputy patrolling the perimeter of the prison’s Temporary Housing Center, or “tents,” at 11:53 p.m. noticed damage to one of the tents, a Sheriff’s Office news release says. The deputy reported this incident and later determined that inmate Mitchell Manning had escaped from the tent, the release says. The Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Division conducted a search Saturday for Manning, the release says. The New Orleans Police Department and other law enforcement agencies were helping with the search, the release says. Manning, 40, was booked into the prison Jan. 11 on counts of domestic abuse battery, home invasion, simple criminal damage to property, possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, the release says. Prior to that arrest, Manning was free on a bond of $45,000 while awaiting trial on a charge of distribution of cocaine, the release says. Each tent was staffed properly at the time of the incident, the release says. The deputy who noticed the damage was conducting a routine nightly patrol around the exterior of the tent area, the release says. N.O. man dies from gunshot wounds NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans police on Friday were investigating the death of a 43-year-old man who was discovered with gunshot wounds inside his vehicle on Frenchmen Street. Officers found the victim, whose name was being withheld until family members are notified, shortly before 8 p.m. in the 3600 block of Frenchmen Street, Officer Hilal Williams said in a news release. The victim, who had multiple gunshot wounds, died later at a hospital, Williams said. Police have no motive and the investigation is ongoing, Williams said. Man discovered dead in apartment facility NEW ORLEANS — A man was found shot to death Saturday in a courtyard inside the Lakewind East Apartment complex. New Orleans police officers found the man, whose identity was being withheld until family members are notified, shortly before 3 p.m. in the 5100 block of Bundy Road with multiple gunshot wounds to the body, Officer Hilal Williams said in a news release. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Williams said. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
