Inmate escapes from temporary facility

Authorities searched on Saturday for an Orleans Parish Prison inmate who escaped late Friday from a temporary housing tent on the grounds of the facility, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Saturday.

A sheriff’s deputy patrolling the perimeter of the prison’s Temporary Housing Center, or “tents,” at 11:53 p.m. noticed damage to one of the tents, a Sheriff’s Office news release says.

The deputy reported this incident and later determined that inmate Mitchell Manning had escaped from the tent, the release says.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Division conducted a search Saturday for Manning, the release says. The New Orleans Police Department and other law enforcement agencies were helping with the search, the release says.

Manning, 40, was booked into the prison Jan. 11 on counts of domestic abuse battery, home invasion, simple criminal damage to property, possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, the release says.

Prior to that arrest, Manning was free on a bond of $45,000 while awaiting trial on a charge of distribution of cocaine, the release says.

Each tent was staffed properly at the time of the incident, the release says.

The deputy who noticed the damage was conducting a routine nightly patrol around the exterior of the tent area, the release says.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Manning is asked to call the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office at (504) 827-8505.
