Landrieu: Jindal looking out for his career

Governor hits back

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu blasted Gov. Bobby Jindal on Tuesday, saying he is putting his political ambitions ahead of the health and economic interests of Louisiana.

Her comments came over Jindal’s rejection of “Medicaid expansion” — part of the federal Affordable Care Act, called ‘Obamacare,’ which goes into effect in 2014. The expansion would allow people who earn too little money to buy their own insurance, but also earn too much money, or otherwise don’t qualify for Medicaid, to get coverage under the government program.

“He just seems to be adamant about pushing his political future ahead of the economic interests of the people of Louisiana. It’s very disheartening to me and a growing number of people in our state,” said Landrieu. D-La. “It’s his quest to be the next president and to check off the tea party ‘I am the most conservative person in America’ check list. If he were to get his mind and heart on the people he’s representing, we might have better outcomes.”

Landrieu’s comments came on the same day another oft-mentioned presidential prospect New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie became the eighth and latest Republican governor to accept the Medicaid expansion for his state.

Landrieu participated in a telephone news conference by Families USA, a Washington, D.C. advocacy group that pushes “the consumer perspective in national and state health policy debates,” and the Louisiana Consumer Healthcare Coalition, a Breaux Bridge-based alliance of groups lobbying for “creation of a consumer-centered health-care system.”

The two organizations issued a report Tuesday that they say showed that the Medicaid expansion would help 421,000 people in Louisiana get health coverage.

The $1.1 billion annually spent by the federal government to provide that medical care in Louisiana would have a ripple effect creating 15,600 new jobs and $1.8 billion in increased economic activity by 2016, the report concluded.

The Medicaid expansion would come at a modest cost to the state with the federal government initially paying 100 percent for the first three years and then states would pay a small portion after that, up to 10 percent.

Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, said Jindal is “committing fiscal malpractice.”

Jindal, a Republican, did not respond to an interview request.

His press office released a statement, quoting the governor, that did not address the study’s findings, but stated that Medicaid expansion would cost Louisiana taxpayers about $1 billion “in only” 10 years.

“The reality is Medicaid relies on an outdated model that costs taxpayers billions of dollars for poor outcomes. Yet, President Obama and his ally, Sen. Landrieu, would have you believe that a government program is good for economic development. It’s a fundamental philosophical difference. Sen. Landrieu and President Obama believe that growing government will help grow jobs. That’s not how the economy works,” Jindal’s written statement said.

Later in the day, state health chief Bruce Greenstein initiated a telephone conference call with reporters to question the study’s conclusions, including its projection of people affected by the Medicaid expansion. He said the number is more like 250,000 uninsured.

Greenstein said his agency has not done any economic or other modeling on the Medicaid expansion impact since 2010.

Jindal’s political adviser, Timmy Teepell, called to say: “What this whole thing is about is the fact that the governor went to the White House yesterday (Monday) and suggested that the president delay Obamacare and also called the president out for using scare tactics on the sequestration.”

Sequestration is the mandatory cuts in the federal budget that will go into effect on Friday absent a compromise between Democrats and Republicans.

Landrieu is attacking Jindal because she “did not appreciate the governor’s calling out the president,” Teepell said. He is a partner with OnMessage Inc., a political strategy firm based in suburban Washington, D.C.

The GOP governors of Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota and Ohio have previously announced their willingness to accept the federall funds.

Twenty-four states have announced plans to participate in expanding Medicaid.

The governors of Louisiana and 12 other states, mostly in the Deep South, have announced they will not participate in the expansion.

Pollack, of Families USA, said the Republican governors who have opted for Medicaid expansion are “thinking about the well-being of the people in their state” while Jindal is all about “running for president.”

Pollack noted that states’ decisions are not binding for all time. They can back out at any point, he said.

I also don't appreciate the so-called governor "calling out" the President. Teepell seems to enjoy saying that, and it only reinforces my opinion that Republican politicians have totally lost their way. They cannot conduct themselves as adults any longer, and their quickly dwindling, low-information supporting public are the only ones enjoying it. Proceed, Teepell. Proceed, Governor.

For someone who advocates a "inconsequential as possible" government, Jindal sure seems to like government a whole lot.

Scrooge, you state the truth. This radical concept -- independent thought -- is terrifying. Better to let someone who claims "authority" do all the thinking, whether they ply their authority through a glowing screen, a sound cone or the Sunday comic strips.

Actually, the question was about voting for the Nazi or the crook. The Nazi was a Republican. These primitive tribal allegiances obviously lead to nowhere, why persist? Is it because without someone to blame, one must confront one's own inadequacies? Paradise was never achieved in the past with any political persuasion, dem or rep, lib or con, the best solution may be to transcend blind allegiance and thought. But nah, its more fun to blame someone else. Unfettered thought is scary, it might cause questioning the tenets of one's beliefs which are never real, regardless of orientation. and then what would be the point?

It is a huge problem when people like Landrieu think Obama should not be criticized. Most of the media will not criticize Obama. For all practical purpose most of the media were a part of the Obama reelection team. The media will not hold Obama accountable for failed policies and his corruption. It will be too late to criticize Obama when his policies lead to the next recession or when his accumulated debt overwhelms the federal government.

8) Comment by agagent - 27/02/2013

In the Duke-Edwards runoff the question was: are you voting for Duke or the crook? We elected the crook who was a Democrat.

9) Comment by unevahno - 27/02/2013

After reading some of the comments on this page, I can understand why Louisiana elected David Duke to office and almost made him Governor. Louisiana is last in all the categories that count (education, avg. income etc) and very proud of being illiterate and conservative. Pardon the redundancy.

10) Comment by agagent - 27/02/2013

Jindal’s statement is correct, and Mary “we don’t have a spending problem” Landrieu does not seem to care that Medicaid takes money from other parts of the state budget or that the national debt is approaching $17 trillion.

11) Comment by rekamyah - 27/02/2013

Oh, and I guess Mary is not looking out for her career either? No, that would never happen with at CAREER politician!

12) Comment by agagent - 27/02/2013

The Advocate reported that Medicaid pays for the vast majority of all births in Louisiana. This is amazing since less than 20% live in poverty. The most likely explanation is that it easy to game the system to make taxpayers pay. With a help of a lawyer it is relatively easy to become cash poor to qualify for Medicaid.

13) Comment by rekamyah - 27/02/2013

Ha! Mary is taking a page from Barak's political book. She's already campaigning and slinging mud since she knows that Jindal is eyeing a run for her Senate seat! Just a little apprehensive about your chances against Bobby so you have to start negative campaigning this early, huh Mary?

14) Comment by agagent - 27/02/2013

Medicaid is based on reimbursement, often below costs, so providers and states maximize costs to receive more money. Participants have no incentive to save on the costs, either.

15) Comment by agagent - 27/02/2013

Medicaid costs have increased by about 8% a year and are unsustainable. There are not limits on the costs. Each year Louisiana shifts hundreds of millions of dollars from higher education, health and hospitals, etc. to Medicaid. Then liberals, who are responsible for Medicaid, blame Jindal for the budget cuts.

16) Comment by jeighcee - 27/02/2013

Mary's career is teetering on the brink of disaster. If she goes along with the current crazies in the leftist senate and causes people in LA to lose their weapons, she's toast!

Talk about looking out for a career: see http://jeffsadow.blogspot.com/2013/02/misinformed-landrieu-bullies-to-serve.html

20) Comment by foldgers - 27/02/2013

Or the headline should read, "Property tax non-payer, speaks out against person who actually pays their property taxes."

21) Comment by wiliedog - 27/02/2013

Well we all certainly know that Mary is all for the 'little folk' and cares not a whit about her career. At least Bobby is trying to save the taxpayers a few dollars by not expanding the Medicaid roles to include people who can afford their own health care...they just can't afford that and two cars, house full of electronics, cruises, fishing boat, camp house and all the other necessities of life.

22) Comment by PLac - 27/02/2013

Profile of the Sociopath: They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

23) Comment by RSigler59 - 27/02/2013

Let's keep it civil. Commenting on her weight is a cheap shot, and if you think her weight is an issue, post your own picture so we can judge you. Size has nothing to do with governance. Living in DC is very expensive, with property values amongst the highest in the U.S.. She makes big money, her husband is an attorney and makes good money, and they come from well heeled families. You can only speculate about other things. Like it or not, Landrieu has consistently voted for Louisiana residents, and carried the water on alot of Louisiana issues. She has voted the conservative Southern line on almost every big issue. Being a Democrat does not make one Liberal, just like being a Republican does not make one Conservative or remotely correct. A heck of a lot of what we are getting these days isn't real Conservatism. It's not reasoned or logical. And that it why it is failing to convince the voters.

24) Comment by Warp7 - 27/02/2013

The bottom line, the real joke here is Jindal, hands down. He is nothing but a yes man to the GOP. Here cares about one thing and only one thing, his own self interest. This joker has been stuck on stupid.

25) Comment by biglsufan - 27/02/2013

And your not looking out for your job, Mary? $3.2 million dollar house in DC on a $175,000 a year job? You can't have that lifestyle without using your political influence. Do you not feel guilty for misleading the American People? Do you not see what you and the rest of the politicians are doing to this GREAT country? Have you lost all of your integrity just to say you brought $20 million dollars of PORK home? Hard decisions have to be made for us not to become the next Greece. Why don't you stand up for once and do the RIGHT thing!

26) Comment by KilgoreTrout - 27/02/2013

In his effort to become President of the United States in 2016, Bobby Jindal has been touring our country rightfully pointing out the fiscal problems we face as a nation. However, Jindal is not revealing and the national media is not asking about the fiscal situation in Louisiana since Jindal has been governor. – Despite the “smoke and mirrors” used by Jindal to prepare the Fiscal Year 2014 State Operating Budget, the reality is that there is at least a $1.2 Billion revenue shortfall that is not addressed. That shortfall is the equivalent of the annual Federal budget deficit. – State Debt has grown under Jindal from $1,186 per person to $1,335 per person. The per capita figures are the equivalent of the Federal debt. – The Unfunded Accrued Liability (“UAL”) in the state-supported pension funds has grown from $12.1 Billion to $18.5 Billion as of March, 2012. The UAL is similar to the looming Social Security problems on the Federal level. The state Operating Budget problems are only the “tip of the iceberg.” The debt and pension liability remain below the surface. Let’s hope that Jindal doesn’t do to America what he’s done to Louisiana. We don’t need another equivalent of the sinking of the Titanic at the national level.

27) Comment by swinham - 27/02/2013

"“The reality is Medicaid relies on an outdated model that costs taxpayers billions of dollars for poor outcomes. " Okay, Governor, let's say we agree - where is your magic plan to fix or replace it? Or, are you really saying people who can't afford it don['t deserve health care?

28) Comment by tball - 27/02/2013

That's the pot calling the kettle black. I am glad Proud Mary is not trying to be a career politician. It's re-election time, she is on the prowl! She is for the Keystone Pipeline now, and other energy items. We need term limits!!!!!!!!!!!

29) Comment by spqr - 27/02/2013

Sister Mary and Piyush have to go. Toss in the Roemer family too. All of them are stains on this state.

30) Comment by Sundance - 27/02/2013

Any other state in the USA would have an I-49 East from Alec to Memphis but thanks to Sister Mary and her SocDemo clowns Louisiana is a transportation backwater. Also, any other state would have an East - West 4 lane from Natchez through Alec to Texas but again Sister Mary and her clowns have ignored the transportation needs of our state. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

31) Comment by Sundance - 27/02/2013

Every six years Sister Mary flies to Shreveport in a lear jet, has a press conference and says Barksdale, then disappears again for another six years. I am sure she is real proud of OB and the clowns in DC.. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

32) Comment by Mildred Citizen - 27/02/2013

Democrats keep handing out the candy and handing the bill to our children and grandchildren. Maybe Bobby Jindal just has principles that there has to be a line in the sand somewhere to stop the giveaway programs that we don't have money for?

33) Comment by Bighug - 27/02/2013

Jindal looking out for his career? Well, DUH! Jindal knows how to get elected in Louisiana; just get the nod from the real leader of the state, Gene Mills. The rest of the US has a higher average IQ and probably won't elect him. He may have a better chance running for Pope.

34) Comment by Woody - 26/02/2013

after reading some of these comments, it makes it a lot easier to understand why obama was re-elected.

35) Comment by Bouncer - 26/02/2013

The headline should read "Landrieu States the Obvious."

36) Comment by Being_Stupid - 26/02/2013

Landrieu = Democrat Party Elite = Modern Day Plantation Owner, Socialism = Slavery

37) Comment by gtinla - 26/02/2013

Jindal once again hides behind a written statement. The circle's closing in, Bobby. Pretty soon, you will be one of a very few who oppose Medicaid expansion.

38) Comment by teacherguy - 26/02/2013

I think it is high time we get rid of ALL the standing elected representatives, clean house, and put in people that have no clue what they are doing in politics...they will create a budget that begins to decrease our debt as they would do with their home finances, immigration? politically incorrect representatives would simply say "if you wanna be a US citizen, get on board...if you don't, go home", politically incorrect representatives would expect citizenry to work first, be disabled second...even if it means doing menial tasks like picking up garbage, regular/politically incorrect people are what made this country great!!!! And we need a full dose of that to get us back on track...

Sometimes Mary makes a lot of sense. But jumping on Crazy Joe's anti gun band wagon was one of those times and that tends to cancel the other times out in my book.

40) Comment by slye753 - 26/02/2013

talk about calling the pot black. mary has been in the trough a lot long er than bobby. increased federal spending means more taxes on us. nothing is free anymore. so mary just wants to extend entitlements and create more social parasites, as usual

41) Comment by crazycajun - 26/02/2013

Scot ,take it from those of us that have and are dealing with booby's messes up front and personal, he really really doesn't know what he's talking about. He impresses those that have little first hand knowledge of the situations by throwing out facts and figures at a mile a minute. His "figures" are always cooked. Take the medicaid overhaul for instance. For the last four years it's been let's try this. When that idea blows up as it always does, let's try that. As of today the CEO at EKL when asked what's going on, she will tell u she has no earthly idea. As of today the financing for the plan has not been approved. As of today nothing has been finalized. At Woman's hospital they are starting to have buyer's remorse. The booby administration misrepresented a whole host of situations Woman's would have to handle. Financially they are not doing as well as the booby administration promised. L'il booby's dominoes are starting to come down with more to follow.

And Mary, I guess you being a "career" politician is something you don't worry about. Are you going to vote in favor of Vitter's bill to no longer allow automatic raises for Congress? Put your money where your mouth is, Mary.

Finally a voice of reason! Thanks Mary Landrieu!

49) Comment by spqr - 26/02/2013

And the Jindal machine continues its slide. May it all collapse soon.

50) Comment by ScotB - 26/02/2013

Aside from the validity of Governor Jindal's statement that Medicaid is an out of date system and unaffordable for the state going forward, it is possible that he rejects increased federal spending on principle - because the nation cannot afford it. If the federal leadership can find a way to balance the budget and pay for it, then fine. Otherwise, our compassion for today's poor is making indentured servants out of generations to come. That's not real compassion at all.
