Denham Springs man given 15 years as a felon with a gun
ST. FRANCISVILLE — A Denham Springs man accused of threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend last year received a 15-year prison term Thursday in a plea bargain with prosecutors.
Adam M. Lovett, 30, 32089 Stewart Drive, had been charged with attempted second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced felony charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Twentieth Judicial District Judge William G. Carmichael said the sentence is to be served without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
Defense attorney James Manesseh said Lovett apologizes to the victim and people of West Feliciana Parish for his actions and would use his time in prison to better himself.
West Feliciana Parish Sheriff J. Austin Daniel said in September the woman Lovett threatened had been in a relationship with him but moved to a relative’s house in St. Francisville to get away from him. She also got a protective order prohibiting Lovett from contacting her.
Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Metz noticed a car moving slowly by the woman’s home on U.S. 61 and, thinking someone was possibly planning to burglarize the home, Metz turned around and found the car in the woman’s driveway with its hood raised.
Lovett and his mother, who also was in the car, claimed they were going to a casino and developed car trouble, but Metz noticed the butt of a pistol sticking from under the front seat of the car.
After learning that Lovett was a convicted felon, Metz called for assistance, and deputies found two loaded handguns under the seat, Daniel said.
Examining social media postings, deputies discovered Lovett allegedly had posted farewell comments to his friends on social media and statements such as, “I’ll be on the news,” Daniel said.
Deputies also found a specific threat to kill the woman on Lovett’s phone, the sheriff said.
