Delegation ranks high on conservative list

Reps. Scalise, Fleming, Landry named

WASHINGTON — Two current members and a former member of the Louisiana congressional delegation rated among the top five most conservative members of the U.S. House of Representatives, according to an annual rankings list released Tuesday.

Reps. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson; John Fleming, R-Minden; and former Rep. Jeff Landry, R-New Iberia, all scored in the top five of the National Journal’s annual list of the “most conservative” House members.

Landry ranked fourth while Scalise and Fleming were locked in a five-way tie for fifth.

Landry left Congress in January after he was defeated in a re-election bid by Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette.

The two of them were forced to run against each other because of redistricting.

Boustany did not rate in the top 29 “most conservative” House members.

Scalise this year became the chairman of the staunchly conservative Republican Study Committee.

Louisiana did not have anyone rate in the “most liberal” list. Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, is the only Democrat from Louisiana in the House.

The ratings lists were compiled by comparing congressional votes on key issues.

@nimby: Too bad we can't just cut the funding of those that you described and herd them off to Vermont or California. Imagine.....

the reason La. is one of the poorest , most uneducated states is partially due to a segment of the population that prefers to quit school , by their own choice , and rush into a parenthood they aren't prepared for and cannot afford .

Of course 8point6 would think Mary Landreiu is among the most liberal. He's so far right even the right looks like the left, so naturally any Democratic politician would be the most liberal ever to hold office. But this article does serve one purpose. It explains why Louisiana is among the poorest and least educated states in the nation.

"Louisiana did not have anyone rate in the “most liberal” list." Well, duhhhhh. IMO, the reason for this is that, the majority of Louisianans work for a living and have common sense. Try rating Louisiana senators for the "most liberal". Here, I'll help. mary landreiu Ok. Let's hear it from my "progressive" friends! If you want to rate anyone in the most liberal list, just go to CA, IL, Washington dc, Massachusetts.
