Website claims Sen. Mary Landrieu owes taxes

WASHINGTON — A news website is attacking U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu for outstanding property tax penalties on her family’s Washington, D.C., home.

An article in The Daily Caller, a website founded by conservative pundit Tucker Carlson, calls it a “twist of hypocrisy” that Landrieu, D-La., is calling for more federal revenues — in addition to budget cuts — while having taxation penalties of her own.

Washington, D.C., property assessment records show her Capitol Hill home is valued at $2.36 million and is facing $1,206.95 in penalties and interest as of Feb. 2.

The home is listed under the name of Landrieu’s husband, Frank Snellings, and has more than $20,000 in annual property taxes. The property also had penalties in 2005 and 2006.

Landrieu is a top target for the Republican Party in 2014 when she faces re-election as the most powerful Democrat in an increasingly conservative state.

Landrieu has argued that the federal budget and deficit problems cannot be solved by cutting alone. She has contended that any deal must include Republicans accepting more revenues by eliminating some of the corporate-desired credits, such as “closing offshore tax havens” for corporations.

“There is no doubt that we have a budget challenge on our hands and that revenues are not in line with spending,” Landrieu said in an interview earlier this month. “I have been saying consistently for years now that, in order to correct it, you’ve got to have both additional revenues and spending reductions.”

The Daily Caller article says it’s hypocritical of Landrieu to call for extra tax revenues while having taxation penalties of her own.

Landrieu criticized Republicans and conservative media outlets for focusing on nondefense discretionary spending as out of control.

She said the spending includes paying for veterans’ benefits, transportation infrastructure, education and more.

The real spending problem is with mandatory spending for “earned benefits” programs like Social Security, she said. There are a lot more retirees. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid combine for more than 40 percent of federal spending, she said.

Landrieu and her husband are traveling in Asia this week and Washington, D.C., government offices were closed Monday because of the President’s Day federal holiday.

“When they reopen, we will be able to supply you with additional information on this issue,” Landrieu spokeswoman Amber McDowell said in an email response.

Some of Landrieu’s potential opponents in 2014 include U.S. Reps. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge; Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette; and John Fleming, R-Minden; former U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry, R-New Iberia; and state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education President Chas Roemer, of Baton Rouge.

A word to the wise (or not so much): you guys don't want to make another pretend scandal out of this. It'll backfire on you, like Benghazi. The boy can only cry wolf so many times. Save your phony outrage for real scandals. Senator Bob Menendez of NJ seems to have really stepped in it. Go nuts.

That is what I don't understand. It seems that people assume just because a politician is a democrat, that they are not super wealthy. She does have one of the very FEW homes in DC with an actual grass yard. Not very large, but she does have one. And if you democrats think Mary if for you less wealthy people, you should really ask some of her past interns. She couldn't care less. She may go on TV and act like she cares, but anyone who even works for her, she feels that she is miles above them, and quite honestly, you too. She just likes her career in politics and making it look like she cares for the poor, keeps her in there. Hey, I wonder if she uses any of the tax loopholes to pay less taxes? I bet she does. Wanna bet that her husband's company does also? MOST republicans and MOST democrats who are in Washington do NOT care about you. They care about themselves and that is it. There may be a few who truly do care, but give them a few terms there, since they are not limited, and chances are they will eventually forget why they ran in the first place.

Conservatives are arguing that she purposefully withheld a measley $1200 in property taxes on a multi-million dollar home? That's dumb. I'm sure it's an accounting error. I owed money to the IRS one time. I didn't do it on purpose. The only people who would think this is some kind of scandal are the same rubes who actually visit the Daily Caller. No story here.

oh yea Attila democrats are the only Hippocrates in politics. gay republicans in bathroom stalls don't count. diaper Dave got a pass. and countless republicans caught driving around drunk or debating drunk or let us not for get voting and railing against stimulus money and then begging for it to come to their state so they could go politic in the little towns and villages and hand the little mayors big old Obama checks while they mug for the cameras.

I always found it profound that the very Democrats in D C who repeatedly tell us that we have an obligation to help those "less fortunate" so taxes must rise, are the same people who are millionaires many times over. It is easy to pontificate and sermonize to the masses on what they should do with their money...they do not have to worry about paying the bills, car notes, or how they will provide for their families. Hypocrites, one and all.

Wow! Mary Landrieu lives in an expensive home in Washington DC and her husband has,a couple of times, had a dispute over property taxes - all of which have been resolved so far. Proof that evil liberals will destroy our country!

Also, from D.C. website re Mr. Snellings' house: ** Not receiving the Homestead Deduction. Recordation Date: 06/27/1997. In D.C., taxes payments are due twice a year. Latest, 2012 SECOND HALF Tax Owed $10,043.30 Penalty Amt $1,004.33 Interest $202.62 Fees $.00 Total Original Due $11,250.25 Total Credits $.00 Total Payments $10,043.30 Balance Due $1,206.95 (10.7% of total owed). If I were to guess, I'd think Mr. Snelling is trying to get current on his property tax owed. But, that's just me. I could be wrong I presume he is paying property tax on his home in Louisiana for which I hope he is claiming the Homestead Deduction. Oh, he is a real estate agent in the D.C. area according to his website.

"... Mary Landrieu's election to the U.S. Senate [1997]. ... We purchased a vacant lot on Capitol Hill and built a home on E Capitol Street, four blocks from the Capitol. The real estate market was quite weak at the time but I believed it would improve and it has. I became the contractor shortly after construction of the house began and completed it in the Summer of 2002." -- Frank Snellings' website. In real estate, location, location, location. And, good timing doesn't hurt. Therefore, $2.36 million in value (Land: $513,350 & Improvements: $1,849,780 from D.C. REAL PROPERTY SERVICES website.

Why didn't she just use some of the $300 million that she sold her yes vote for on obamacare to pay the taxes? Problem solved.

WOW!! A $2.3 million dollar home in Washington D.C.? That's incredible on a senators salary of $175,000 a year. Is she looking out for the common folks or herself?
