Lafayette police: One teen dead, two wounded in shooting

Man, 18, booked with first-degree murder, attempted murder

Police on Sunday arrested an 18-year-old Lafayette man in the early morning shooting and killing of one teenager and wounding of two teens accused of breaking into his truck.

Seth Fontenot, 132 Green Meadow Road, was booked into Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder, said Lafayette police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton.

Police arrested Fontenot before noon, booking records show.

Police have not released the name of the teen who died or other details in the shootings, but may do so Monday, Mouton said. The teen who died was a passenger and the driver and the other passenger are listed in stable condition, he said.

Investigators say the victims were riding in a pickup in the Bellevue Plantation subdivision, on Johnston Street south of the Mall of Acadiana, when Fontenot fired three shots at the truck, Mouton said.

Police had previously identified the area as the Canberra subdivision.

The driver of the pickup sped away and took the passengers to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center on Ambassador Caffery Parkway by Verot School Road, Mouton said.

Hospital officials called police at 2:15 a.m. to report three 15-year-old boys with gunshot wounds had arrived in the emergency room, Mouton said.

Mouton could not say why the boys were out at 2 a.m., saying the investigation is ongoing. He said he was unaware of any connection between Fontenot and the teenagers.

The shooting occurred in the 100 block of Green Meadow Road at 1:45 a.m., when Fontenot encountered the victims outside his residence, Mouton said.

Fontenot’s sister, Kailey, said her brother caught the boys breaking into his truck.

“That’s why gunshots were fired is because somebody was on his property inside his truck,” Kailey Fontenot said. “He didn’t shoot someone just to shoot someone.”

Kailey Fontenot said her brother told her he intended to shoot a tire so he could retrieve his keys, catch up to the boys in his truck and find out why people have been breaking into it.

She said her brother’s truck has been broken into four times in the past six months and their mother’s purse was stolen when someone broke into her sport utility vehicle about three months ago.

The family has filed police reports for the break-ins, but never heard back from police about the previous break-ins, Kailey Fontenot said.

Late Sunday, Mouton said he could not access the files that contain the reports Fontenot mentioned.

Fontenot said she also called police about Sunday’s break-in, but did not hear back from them until Sunday morning, when they arrived at her house to investigate the shooting.

“If he would have known they were innocent children just acting out because they’re young, he would never, he would never try to harm anyone,” she said.

“It’s 2 in the morning and it was dark, but you see dark shadows in your truck and whenever you go outside and you’re yelling at them to leave, they jump in the truck and you don’t know how old they are,” Fontenot said. She said she thinks the boys live in the neighborhood, but her family has not been told their names.

Police officers went to Seth’s job, Another Broken Egg restaurant in River Ranch, where they questioned him and ultimately arrested him, Kailey Fontenot said.

She said the family spoke to her brother briefly, and the boy’s death is weighing heavily on him.

“I mean he’s hurting and he knows he’s going to have to live with this for the rest of his life,” Kailey Fontenot said.

While her brother sits in jail, she said she wants someone to tell her why those 15-year-old boys were driving a truck around at 2 a.m. “I’m sorry. My heart is very heavy for someone that lost their kids, but where were the parents at?” Kailey Fontenot said. “They’re under 15 years old driving a truck. I’m just concerned because my brother is facing very big charges for something that shouldn’t have happened.”

Same here "wherearewegoing", only going of what is being reported or commented on. Only question I have is...Why would a responsible kid (Seth), by any ones standard, who has a part time job and a 4.0 at ULL, set up a road block on a night he had to go to work the next day, and shoot innocent passers by? Doesn't add up. If that's what he did, he will pay for it. All I know is that kids lie, always have and always will. Hope the injured kids make a speedy recovery of both mind and body. Our prayers are with ALL involved in this tragic no win situation.

@Ivy I agree, and I'll be the first to say that if this story is false, and Equalizer's is true, my tune will change significantly. We'll just have to wait and see (though we'll probably never know what really happened).

3) Comment by Ivy - 12/02/2013

@Equalizer: Sounds like movie of the week material. different skin color, different scenario. I have to hand it to the other posters, though. At no time have they referred to the young teenagers as "thugs", "animals" , or any of the other derogatory names they have slung at other teens who fell cross-ways of the law. You really are full of angst over nothing...so stop beating your chest and wailing that they have got it all wrong. Nobody maligned these boys' character or said they were drug dealers, drug buyers, they are just going off what was printed in the story and we're all entitled to an opinion.

Maybe this will help clear things up for everybody: Jon Bellamy 27 minutes ago Just to put an end to all of the rumors and speculation about the events leading up to Saturday night's tragedy, I wanted to let everyone know what really happened. After being at the parade Saturday, William and a few friends gathered at one of the boys' house, and were all planning on spending the night there. Austin lives near the house where the boys were, and unfortunately, left his house, without his parents knowing, to walk over and join them. As the night got later, Austin decided he needed to head back home, and was about to walk back. William told him that there was no way he was going to let him walk back, alone, at that time of night. So Cole and William asked the older brother of the friend whose house they were at if they could use his truck to take Austin home a few blocks away. Neither Cole, nor William, knew exactly where Austin lived, so Austin gave them directions as they went. Once they got near Austin's house, they slowed down as Austin was pointing out which house it was, and the next thing they knew, bullets were flying thorough the truck. That is all that happened. No matter what anyone says, reads, or hears on the news, none of what happened Saturday night has ANYTHING to do with car break-ins, drug deals gone bad, or any of the other ridiculous things that are being said. The only thing these 3 kids did wrong was end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, NOTHING else. Cole and William were trying to do the right thing, and had nothing but the safety of their friend in mind. I don't want to get into too many graphic details, but these boys should be lauded as heroes. Once this tragedy happened, neither William, nor Cole, had any idea how to even get out of the neighborhood, so any rumors about any of them having anything to do with any break-ins in November or December, are completely base-less. William actually had to punch in his friend's (where he was staying) address in his phone to find their way out of the neighborhood. And Cole, also being injured, was able to get the 3 of them to the hospital, under what anybody with a pulse would determine to be horrific circumstances. If that's not heroic, nothing is. And I would hope that all of the people starting rumors and spreading lies will realize that the shooter is being charged with FIRST DEGREE murder, and 2 counts of attempted FIRST DEGREE murder. There is a reason the charges are what they are. IF anyone was doing what the speculation says they were doing, the charges would be different. I will add this, as my son is my best friend in the world! As every father out there that has seen your son in pain knows....it's a miserable feeling. For all that know him, you know he has a heart bigger than most. Not many kids have an out pouring support of 300+ kids and parents at his side during an event like this. At the same time, what sickens me is the media and their pitiful cry for stories. For a kid to be in a hospital with 24 hour security, having to use an alias because of the media is disgusting. We have had media calling, acting as doctors, to get information. It's your job, you look for a story...but you suck. He has a bullet lodged in his jaw that entered through the back of his neck. It missed every major artery and vessel that was an ABSOLUTE MIRACLE! With that said, I will let my anger send a message through the "Social Media" and hope it gets back to the ***** coward SETH FONTENOT that killed one child and has threatened the lives of my child and his friend Cole. When you go to trial, regardless of what type of plea and lies your ***** attorney say, the facts are out buddy and you have NO way of avoiding what is deservedly coming to you. I will leave it at that! To all of my FB friends, please share and/or re-post this. Its WAY past time for these kids to be acknowledged as the victims they are. Plain and simple. Thanks in advance.

Tea_Slayer; you are right I was making a accusation, and I love mud. The Equalizer; clearly you are to close to this tragedy, I will let the police sort it out from here. If what you say is true, and a parent gave keys to an underage driver they were wrong and need to be held accountable.

6) Comment by Buck - 12/02/2013

This is a tragic situation for our entire community. In likely the shooter will walk. Subject to check, this is due too an ALEC written bill, sponsored by the NRA, passed in the 2006 La legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Blanco of Lafayette. It follows the Stand Your Ground concept and enacted as La Revised Statute 14:20, Justifiable Homicide. Paragraph 3 is most relevant too this event. I predict this whole matter will soon disappear from the media as it regards only well adjusted young while males. I.e, we will learn noting and continue on our way as the leader per capita in deaths and shootings by firearms. Wonder if our economic development folks raise this point.

7) Comment by Bouncer - 12/02/2013

On its surface, the "ban cars" analogy appears to be a good one. However, it is not an argument against gun control but is instead a red herring and a barrier to rational discussion about gun laws. The fact of the matter is that both cars and guns are tools, and both can kill. Nobody has ever seriously proposed banning cars, but when we finally recognized drinking and driving as a real menace to society (well, in every civilized place, with the apparent exception of Louisiana), we enacted stringent laws holding people accountable. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to ask that the same regulatory measures applicable to getting a car be applied to obtaining a gun, with the addition of a waiting period and restrictions on felons or the mentally ill.

One problem I see is that DMJ and the obamacrats haven't CONVINCED the police dept and liberal media to report that the shooter used a " BUSHMASTER AR-15 ASSAULT WEAPON WITH A HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINE " in order to strengthen their agenda. However if it wasn't the above mentioned weapon we must find out what kind it was so we can ban those and hold the manufacturer responsible as we do the automobiles used in the millions of alcohol related deaths. We must also stop making automobiles so readily available to those who drink and drive.Wow look at how many lives could be saved yearly.

10) Comment by HerbF - 12/02/2013

Equalizer, if the facts are as you state them to be, then the shooter is clearly wrong. But, it's also true that said shooter is described as "a straight A student in accounting who works part time", and who had never been in any trouble with the law. It is clearly a tragedy either way, but I'm going to let law enforcement provide me with the supporting facts. I do not doubt that you believe them to be true though.

11) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 12/02/2013

1st degree murder....2 counts of 2nd degree murder... Sounds right to me. Have fun in jail, kid. Bet you're regretting having that gun and using it now, eh? Hope this will serve as a cautionary tale to all the idiots who think firing on a fleeing vehicle was a good idea. Probably not...because idiots are idiots, but hey... some might learn.

13) Comment by The Equalizer - 12/02/2013

i will attempt to help all of the ignorant posters here understand the actual situation. The 3 boys involved in the incident were at a sleepover in the same neighborhood as the shooter and the boy who was killed. (None of the boys have ever been in trouble with the law, to answer some other uninformed posters queries)The boy who was killed decided he wanted to go home at about 1:45 and was going to walk the roughly 300 yards to his house. His friends thought it would be best if they drove him so they were given the keys to the truck by the trucks owner to drive him home and come right back. (Even though they were technically breaking curfew, driving without a license -the driver had only a permit-at this time of the morning I would guess they didn't see the harm in driving in thier own neighborhood to get their friend safely home) When they were passing the home of the shooter, the shooter attempted to stop the vehicle. He shot the driver in the leg/foot and the driver sped off As the boys were leaving the scene, the shhoter shot 2 moretime throiugh the back window strikng the 2 other boys, killing one and hitting the other in the neck. The driver drove himself and his injured friends to Lourdes hospital and the police were called at 2:15 by hospital personell. From thetime the boys left the friend's house, were shot and arrived atthe hospital took all of about 25 minutes. Not enough time to stop and break into a truck, try to steal something, get back in the truck , and get shot at and drive to the hospital. The shooter was waiting in the darkness wanting to get revenge on the person orperson who allegedly broke into his vehicle earlier. The good news for the murderer is that he will not have to worry about any more bills as he will be the guest of the Louisiana Prison System for the rest of his life because of his premeditated decision to kill innocent people. No winners here.

14) Comment by Whatchange - 12/02/2013

tea_Slayer; if you going to comment on something I posted at least read it first. What I said was "and in possession of a stolen truck, "unless" one of the parents wants to own up to giving a 15yo the keys to their truck". I'm guessing you didn't see that word "unless". Any reasonable thinking person would think they took one of their parents truck without permission, which constitutes stealing no matter how you look at it. But you do have the unreasonable thinking people who believe one of the parents will comes forward and say, yes, I gave them the keys to my truck so they could go joyriding at 2am and yes I know they are only 15yo and have no driver license but I didn't think it really mattered, I highly doth that's going to happen, but if the latter parts pans out to be true then I'm wrong. Am I making false accusations, no, I was a teenager once, been there done that, just reasonable thinking. I see you being that pig in the mud again.

15) Comment by nimby? - 12/02/2013

was there any history of "alleged' criminal activity by the teenagers ? a lot of people are frustrated with our criminal justice system and their catch and release policies . as always there will be three sides to the story with the truth buried somewhere in the middle . I don't believe Mr Fontenot's actions were justified tho I can understand his frustration . perhaps in the near future theft will be referred to as pro-active wealth reassessment .

16) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 12/02/2013

where in the article does it say the 15 year olds were in possession of a stolen truck? it's bad enough that they were allegedly burglarizing a truck but why tack on false accusations?

17) Comment by Whatchange - 11/02/2013

The Equalizer; you keep saying 3 innocent boys, now by all accounts of this report and the police, the 3 innocent boys were in violation of curfew, driving without a driver license, and in possession of a stolen truck, unless one of the parents wants to own up to giving a 15yo the keys to their truck, sounds far from innocent. Now I "don't" believe they deserved to be shot, and by all accounts of this report, Fontenot is in the wrong, he shot fleeing perpetrators. These boys are far from innocent, their innocent actions as you say, got one of them killed, one shot, and ruined the life of another person, doesn't sound so innocent to me.

18) Comment by Woody - 11/02/2013

where exactly were the "innocent children" in all of this? oh, that's right, in the truck they stole.

21) Comment by gvm - 11/02/2013

I wonder how many of the posters who think that the shooting of those boys is justified also consider themselves to be Christians? If you accept the commandment thou shalt not steal, can you then ignore the one that states thou shalt not kill? Many of you decry the removal of prayer from schools and yet simultaneously applaud the shooter for "protecting his property." This brand of Christianity, which reeks of hypocrisy, seems to have found safe haven among many on the right - much to the detriment of us all.

22) Comment by Bouncer - 11/02/2013

Just reading back through the comments. For the idiot who asked me if I lock my car and home, what a stupid question. Of course I do. Why? To prevent theft. Here's the difference between me and the young man in the news story (and you, apparently). I would not kill someone over theft and/or vandalism. Killing someone is an awful burden to carry around for the rest of your life, and the only way I would do such a thing would be if I knew for certain that my life was in immediate jeopardy. I've been stolen from on more than one occasion, and never have I felt the impulse to pull a gun on anybody. I've lived a very safe, long, and happy life following that code, and my guess is that I'll go to my grave never having harmed another human being. That suits me just fine.

23) Comment by The Equalizer - 11/02/2013

There was no break-in, no crime to the murderer's property, nothing that justified shooting 3 innocent boys. (Check the official police reports) The murderer was out for revenge for his past problem and picked the wrong people. Of course the sister of the cowardly killer would lie to protect her sibling. Get a license number (he was obviously close enough to the truck to shoot and hit 3 innocent kids) and report it to the police. He chose to shoot in an attempt to do harm to the peolpe inthe truck and he deserves to rot in jail for what he did. He ruined the rest of the lives of the victims' families and his as well. I hope he and his cellmate get along.

27) Comment by Cajun12 - 11/02/2013

The teens were shot committing a crime. Whether they were shot while in flight, or in the act, they were committing a crime. They are not innocent choir boys who were on their way to Bible study as some of the locals in denial would like you to believe. They were in fact, breaking many laws, curfew, drivers license, tresspassing and criminal breaking and entering. Interesting to listen to all of the excuses being made for these teenage criminals. Just as the young man defending his property will have to answer for his actions, so will the teen criminals. One has paid the ultimate price.

28) Comment by HerbF - 11/02/2013

When thiefs are breaking into a vehicle at a house, and the homeowner comes out and confronts them, they are often shot. This has happened repeatedly all over our nation. It happened in New Orleans not long ago. I think the shooter had BETTER think they're armed. Otherwise, he may very likely end up dead. I think he has justification to shoot.

34) Comment by The Realist - 11/02/2013

I'm not justifying the kids for being stupid and allegedly committing a crime, but that in no way, shape, or form justifies murdering someone over committing a misdemeanor crime.....thankfully the country we live in believes the same and this guy will pay gravely for taking the law into his own hands.

35) Comment by mh1949 - 11/02/2013

I bet the two survivors will think again before going around breaking in people's vehicles. Lannonmac, DMJ, Realist, nimby, Bouncer, do you lock your vehicle and your home when you leave ? If so why ? Could it be to keep someone from stealing your possessions ? tell us how you would handle coming home and finding a vehicle backed up to your door and several people coming out with your possessions.Would you possibly help them load more ? Anti-gun DMJ may try stopping them with a stick or you could always call the police and hope they get there within 20-30 minutes or before they attack you and leave with your stuff.

36) Comment by huehuehue - 11/02/2013

@The Realist, good job dodging my questions. They are in the hospital for treatment, and they will be convicted when they are fit to present in court. Mark my words. As for why Fontenot didn't report this incident, it could have been shock, because he was shocked that he nailed the criminals instead of the tires he was aiming for. Now, that does not matter much either. When I was 15, I went to school, I didn't rob, I didn't steal, I didn't drive cars without a driver's permit. What were you doing when you were 15? What do you think normal 15-year-olds should be doing?

37) Comment by wherearewegoing - 11/02/2013

Realist....I'll give you that one. It appears that Fontenot did not call the police to report the crime. That was a colossal mistake on his part. However, he didn't flee the scene. He just went on about his business. Might have planned on calling the police later. I know that after fending off little hellions at 2am I wouldn't have wanted to deal with police....for the fourth time.

40) Comment by HerbF - 11/02/2013

The only way I can see that he would have been charged with 1st Degree Murder, is if he admitted to waiting for someone to break in to his truck. That is intent. >>>>> Supposedly the "kids" had other stolen items in their truck, a "fact" that has been reported, but not confirmed. If one of these "kids" (thieves) was killed in the commission of felony, aren't the two surviving theves guilty of 1st Degree Murder as well? >>>>> If they did have other stolen items in their truck, thus clearly exposing their intentions, then they both should get LONG prison sentences. >>>> And, for the moment at least, I'm more for giving the shooter a parade than for putting him in jail. At 15, they have no driver's license, they are out in violation of curfew, and were (alledgedly) attempting to break in to the shooters truck, AGAIN, which was on his property. Apparently this had been done repeatedly. GREAT job of parenting!

41) Comment by wherearewegoing - 11/02/2013

And yes, I think that even a 15 year old should be held to a higher standard than to just allow him to make his misdemeanor "mistakes." No child is spotless, but good, moral kids do other bad things besides crime because they were raised not only to reject such activities, but to flee from it. Instead they do bad stuff like smoke or drink or put flaming bags of excrement on someone's doorstep. And, as has been stated, it all starts with parenting. Parents should be held to a higher standard and maybe then we'd have better young people. And as far as holding Fontenot to a higher moral standard, I don't think he did anything morally wrong. That's my opinion that you obviously disagree with. By the way, can anyone of you libs argue against @huehuehue's point?

Imagine your hard-earned money just being taken away, continuously by a bunch of criminals, and you can't do anything about it. I really don't care if 3 worthless criminals got shot. Less criminals = a better world. I'd much rather live in a world with no criminals than people saying it's perfectly fine to rob others, but that's just me.

51) Comment by Whatchange - 11/02/2013

wherearewegoing; you are right, he was a awake, heck as far as we know, he could of been sitting in a lawn chair waiting for someone to break into his truck, bottom line is, he broke the law. While I do see your point about protecting ones property by any means necessary, I "do not" believe it is in anyone's best interest as it would lead to all sorts of problems. Just look at Florida's "Stand Your Ground". The last thing we need is a law that justifies what it appears Fontenot did.

52) Comment by wherearewegoing - 11/02/2013

While I acknowledge that it isn't legal for Fontenot to do what he did, I do not support the law as it is written. I think you should be able to protect your property through any means necessary (can't wait to see the hyperbole thrown my way after that one). @Whatchange "Why was Fontenot out at 2am" He wasn't "out" he was "awake".....at his HOME! Probably can't sleep well after being a 3 time victim of theft. As to DMJ's comment. Being a thief is plenty deserving of a death sentence in some countries. And to be honest, I don't know why we're so relaxed about it here. "He had his truck broken into. Big deal." It IS a big deal! Why don't we hold people to a higher moral standard instead of saying acting like it's a good thing that all they wanted to do was illegally break into a car that wasn't theirs and take things that didn't belong to them.....at least they weren't trying to burn the house down. Pitiful.

To began with, three 15yo's driving around at 2am, 2nd, who's truck were they driving, how and where did they get the keys, if a parent gave them the keys they need to be arrested, if they took the keys they stole the truck plain and simple, 3rd, I don't believe a 15yo can get a license can they. I find his story confusing, first it says they were driving around and Fontenot fired on the truck, I have to ask, why was Fontenot out at 2am, then it says Fontenot fired on the truck while in his yard with two of the kids in it, then his sister said he was trying to shoot the tires to retrieve his keys and catch the kids. What truck was he shooting at, if he was shooting at the tires of either truck and hit the cab, Fontenot has no business owning a gun. If he fired on the tires of the getaway truck, he broke the law, he fired on a fleeing perpetrator(s). This story leaves to much to ponder, this shooting is exactly why laws need to change. I can only hope the surviving kids face consequences also, especially, if it is found they were in fact breaking into the truck. I also believe the parents of these kids need to face some kind of punishment. @DMJ; as to you question, who is the victim, I believe all involved are victims. Anyway, just the thoughts of a yahoo redneck, gotta love people who put labels on others.

Lets see here, his truck had been broken into 4 times in the last 6 months. His mothers SUV was broken into and her purse stolen 3 months ago. Granted she should not have left the purse in plain view, but that does not justify incident. I would be willing to bet that the survivors will not attempt the same thing again...at least not at this persons home. Meanwhile the shooter is going to jail for protecting his property. A person should have the right to use any means necessary to protect his property when criminals invade his home or vehicle...after all a persons vehicle is merely and extension of his home.

Ut oh, reports coming out that Fontenot never called the cops after the shooting.....seems like he knew he was guilty to begin with and had something to hide.....Also, just read that all three boys were white.....I know a lot of posters here will be upset to hear that.

"He had his truck broken into. Big deal" .....

61) Comment by The Realist - 11/02/2013

Although the article isn't perfectly clear, I took away from it that he shot them as they were fleeing in their truck....."Investigators say the victims were RIDING in a pickup in the Bellevue Plantation subdivision, on Johnston Street south of the Mall of Acadiana, when Fontenot fired three shots at the truck, Mouton said." .........' whenever you go outside and you’re yelling at them to leave, THEY JUMP IN THE TRUCK and you don’t know how old they are"....."Kailey Fontenot said her brother told her he intended to shoot a tire"

My condolences to both victims. I hope more young people become aware of this, it may help them understand that someone ALWAYS gets hurt when unethical, immoral actions are taken. This time, it hurt both ways.

63) Comment by DMJ - 11/02/2013

So, not only did he admit to firing the shots unprovoked and intentionally, but he fled the scene afterward? Yeah, you yahoos can contribute to his defense fun all you want. He's going down. Kind of hard to argue self-defense when the truck was driving AWAY from him. And excuse me, but since when does being a thief, or in the words of the shooter's own sister, "innocent children just acting out because they’re young," mean you deserve to die?! This idiot shot first and asked quesitons later and now's going to pay for it. He had his truck broken into. Big deal. Some kid lost his life and two others were injured. And just who is the victim here?! I wonder if he thinks it was worth it to take the law into his own hands. I'm guessing not. And yes, I'm going to say it.... had he not had a gun, he wouldn't be in this situation. Guns don't prevent violence. They cause it. This story is a perfect example of one such situation.

64) Comment by HerbF - 11/02/2013

Realist, according to the article, they were in his yard, actually in his truck. This was not on the street.

" If you don't have the balls to take up the responsibilities, then don't commit a crime, it's THAT simple. "....then I assume the same goes for Fontenont? Right???.....He committed a crime of MURDER....the law does not state that you are allowed to shoot someone on the street in front of your house due to them breaking into your car.....If this was someone breaking into his house, then that's a whole different argument ......So then yes, I agree with you. He committed murder and should have the balls to take up the responsibility of his actions. I'm sure the inmates in Angola will be on his side

66) Comment by HerbF - 11/02/2013

I don't know the details of the case, but I'm happy he shot them. If the family wants to know who's responsible for the shooting, tell them to look in the mirror. And, I agree, it'll be hard to get a jury to convict. He should let his attorney do his talking from now on.

I support this man. He was merely protecting his property. If those *victims' parents won't teach them, and if the police can't catch them, let the lesson be learned the hard way. It doesn't even matter how old the kids are, they are committing a crime. A felon is a felon. And like user: wherearewegoing mentioned, it's not like these kids are on their way to contributing to the society or whatever. IMHO, people should see this as an *occupational hazard. If you want to violate other people's rights, properties..etc., you should be ready to man up and face the potential consequences. If you don't have the balls to take up the responsibilities, then don't commit a crime, it's THAT simple.

you choose to take something that isn't yours , expect consequences. life is full of tough lessons . it would be wise to learn from them ...

I, too, would like to contribute to the victim's defense (Mr. Fontenot). I'm not advocating that we throw him a parade or give him a medal, but he was protecting his property. This situation is the kind of thing criminals should fear, and it should make them think twice before committing these crimes. 15 years old, out past their curfew, no parental guidance, no respect for others or their property. I highly doubt this young man was being groomed for college and a future job as a pediatric surgeon. I don't think Fontenot was hot headed, he was being robbed! Is he supposed to just stand there and watch them drive off into the night and let the cops come, fill out a report, then do nothing? So what if insurance would cover it! Every claim you make makes your insurance costs go up! That's like if a guy purposely gave you HIV......don't worry.....insurance will cover it. What a cop out! I plan on looking into this further to see if there is a way to contribute to Fontenot's bail and/or defense. Stay tuned.

I am a close friend of the victim's family, please be respectful of this family who is facing a horrible tragedy and save the political views.

I'm with you, Lannonmac and Realist. It's unfortunate that a life has been taken and other lives shattered because an impulsive teenager whose adrenalin was up mishandled a situation.

Oh yeah The Realist your post made me change my mind and I will go and turn in all my guns today....NOT

73) Comment by The Realist - 11/02/2013

Yea, give a medal to someone for murdering a kid who was committing a misdemeanor offense. You people disgust me......Hopefully this guy gets charged with at least manslaughter and can sit in jail for the next 15-20 years crying about his stupid truck that might have been broken into and that insurance would have paid for but instead he took a KID'S LIFE....Hopefully lesson learned for all the gun nuts out there.

74) Comment by Lannonmac - 11/02/2013

It is like a law of nature or something, a tragic, senseless murder takes place and the redneck peanut gallery starts shouting how the victim deserves it and how the shooter deserves a metal, even though almost nothing is known about the circumstances of the shooting. One kid dead, two kids wounded and a young man’s life ruined because he picked up a gun and played Rambo, and these idiots are cracking jokes about the situation.

75) Comment by Being_Stupid - 11/02/2013

This guy did society a favor. Pin a medal on his chest. Get him out of jail now.

76) Comment by Woody - 11/02/2013

can we contribute to his defense fund?

77) Comment by gary - 11/02/2013

The DA there will have a very hard time getting an a charge of 1st degree murder to stick - if Mr. Fontenot has the right attorney - all the charges may be dropped.

Yes, another case of the spoiled brats out creating victims and the parents could care less. I'm sure the parents are going to say the boys are good boys and were going to be rocket scientists..... Meanwhile the future NASA employees are out breaking into vehicles (and probably a few homes too), the parents will say they were doing it to help pay for college expenses. I'm sorry for Seth. It sounds like the kid works hard for what he has and was tired of being a victim. Seth is the real victim in this mess. The article didn't say if the brats will be charged with breaking into the vehicle when they are released.

"They were innocent children just acting out because they’re young." No, they were out causing trouble and the parents have no interest in controlling them.
