Girl dies trying to cross U.S. 190 Monday

A 7-year-old girl died Monday when she was struck by two vehicles as she attempted to cross U.S. 190 outside of Lawtell, Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons said.

Kendessa Castile attempted to cross the westbound lanes of the highway at 7:18 p.m. when she was struck by a Ford truck driven by Vincent Fruge, 67, of Eunice, and then by a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Ryan Godeaux, 22, of Eunice, who was traveling behind Fruge, Hammons said in a news release.

The crash occurred east of La. 752 between Lawtell and Eunice. The girl lived in Church Point, Hammons said.

Part of the investigation will include finding out whether she was alone and the reason she was trying to cross the road, Hammons said.

“We’re still in the preliminary stages of the investigation,” he said.

Neither Fruge nor Godeaux were injured in the crash.

Hammons said routine toxicology reports were taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Crime Lab; however, alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash.

“Based off our investigation, we will issue any appropriate citations,” he said. “As of right now, there have not been any issued.”

What was a 7 year old doing crossing a busy road by herself? Where was an older sibling or parent? And please, if they are not taller than a car hood, hold their hand in parking lots also. Yes, I am sure her family is having a terrible time of this, but two other families are also affected----those of the men who hit her. Can you imagine having to live with that?

This is one of the saddest & most trajic things I have read in a long time! How can ANYBODY allow a 7 year old child to even be near hwy 190?? Parental supervision, or the lack thereof, is one of the biggest problems of our time!!!

Where were the parents? This is incredibly sad. Totally avoidable accident.

Such a tragedy. Was there a parent or adult nearby to watch out for her ?
