Negotiations with an armed man who barricaded himself in his apartment ended peacefully Thursday night.

A four-member team talked with the man for three and a half hours before he turned over his gun, said Lori Steele of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s Special Response Team stood by while other deputies directed traffic away from the man’s apartment building in a gated community south of Denham Springs during the incident that began around 4:30 p.m.

Deputies evacuated the apartments adjacent to the one where the man barricaded himself, Steele said. Some other residents of the Boardwalk Place Apartments off Vincent Drive stood across the street and watched.

The man, whom the Sheriff’s Office declined to name, was not being booked on any criminal counts, but was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Steele said.

She said he threatened to harm himself, but did not threaten anyone else.

The incident began when deputies from the Denham Springs Marshal’s Office went to the apartment Thursday to evict the man, said Joe Shumate, chief criminal deputy for the Marshal’s Office.

Shumate said the man then barricaded himself in the apartment and threatened suicide.
