Jindal addresses national GOP leaders

Gov. Bobby Jindal told national Republican leaders Thursday night that the party needs “to recalibrate the compass of conservatism.”

Jindal kicked off a four-day visit to the east coast by addressing the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting in Charlotte, N.C.

The Governor’s Office released an embargoed copy of the speech late Thursday.

Jindal divided his speech into three sections, outlining how America is not the federal government, how Republicans can win their argument and how “the election” can be won.

“And now, after losing two presidential elections in a row, is certainly the time for some candid discussion,” he said.

From North Carolina, Jindal planned to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Alfalfa Club dinner and the National Review Institute summit. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney also is expected to be in the nation’s capital for his first trip there since lunching with President Barack Obama after losing the election.

Jindal supported Romney’s bid for the White House. After the election, Jindal accused Romney of dividing American voters.

The Republican National Committee’s winter meeting gave GOP leaders the opportunity to regroup after the election loss.

Jindal followed up Obama’s re-election by becoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association. Speculation is rampant that he wants to blaze a path to the White House.

The governor said in his eight-page remarks Thursday that debating which party can better manage the federal government is small and shortsighted.

“At present we have one party that wants to be in charge of the federal government so they can expand it, and one party that wants to be in charge of the federal government so they can get it under control,” Jindal said.

He characterized debates over the fiscal cliff, the debt ceiling and the vice president’s gun control task force as reality sideshows.

Shreveport got a shout-out from the governor as an example of a real economy that should be the focus instead of the phony economy of Washington.

Jindal blasted Obama for the national debt, accusing the president of not worrying in the least about the level.

“But we, as conservatives, must dedicate our energies and our efforts to growing America, to growing the American economy, to showing the younger generations how America can win the future,” he said.

The solution, Jindal said, is to grow the private sector — a philosophy he has embraced in Louisiana by hiring private businesses to handle state government tasks.

He said Democrats can sell the power of more federal programs, while Republicans promote the rejuvenating power of new businesses in the real world beyond the Washington beltway.

“The Republican Party must become the party of growth, the party of a prosperous future that is based in our economic growth and opportunity that is based in every community in this great country and that is not based in Washington, D.C.,” Jindal said.

Why would anyone pay attention to Jindal? After 6 years, Louisiana is last in all manner of comparisons and its fiscal state is a wreck. Is that what a "prosperous future that is based in our economic growth" looks like?

We have to be careful here in Louisiana. Jindal is willing to sacrifice us in order to benefit his political career. He will pursue policies that may be damaging to our State and our people just to pad his resume with some short term publicity stunt made to look like a thoughtful public policy. He is only using us as a stepping stone. Everyone, in there sphere of work, needs to expose Jindal for the fraud he is. Please note that the circle around Jindal is a bunch of amateurs and they are only able to come up with platitudes with no real punch. We can beat this bunch. I suggest we start by saving LSU from Jindal. We will need a serious research institution to get us out of the mess Jindal is making.

The same man who wants the GOP to stop being the party of stupid also slashes state higher education budgets to the bone. Hypocrisy, thy name is Piyush.

The reason why conservatism is crumbling is because it is NO LONGER RELEVANT! Enough people have and are starting to open their eyes and see just how dumb and out of date the GOP has become.

Wow Bpoint6, another right winger blinded by hate and anger. Typical response from the right to blame the Presidential lost by the GOP for the second time on a fantasy cause. You all lost because the majority of Americans were tired of the same old tired, tried and proven wrong ideology of the right. They majority said it loud and clear that they were not for the hate and angry policy of the right. Start stating real facts and not the typical false statements of the right.

"He (Jindal) can point to Republican governor successes in 30 states representing more than 58 percent of America’s population."--Washington Examiner

"The unemployment rate in these Republican-led states is a full 1.2 points lower than it is in their Democratic-led counterparts. Jindal’s Louisiana is a prime example, where an unemployment rate that had risen to 7.9 percent has now fallen to just 5.5 percent. Those are Reagan Recovery like numbers."--The Washington Examiner

Wow! My "progressive" friends are having a "love fest" today! Governor Jindal. The only way to get more votes for the GOP is to promise freebies to voters. You know, like hussein did last election and the election before that. It worked for him. Good luck on getting the electoral votes from CA, NY, etc. for the next election. This is assuming, (yes, my "progressive" friends, I know about "assuming"), that this country is not bankrupted by then. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth when that happens. Not to mention riots and looting when the giveaway programs are cut.

It appears that Piyush achieved his purported goal of transparency last night. From all accounts, Republicans in attendance saw right through him. This fraud will never make it to Washington. But he'll undoubtedly continue trying over the next 4 years on our dime as our inabsentia governor.

Notice how Jindal frames the problem as 'we keep losing' rather than ' let's figure out what's best for America.' In their minds, the ideas are still sound; they're just not selling them well enough. A real brain trust here...

Can we just rent out the mansion here and make money off of it? He is NEVER in it!! Let's just put him up in a small rent house and use the mansion for paid tours everyday or auction it off for a week at a time or something... what is the upkeep per day of that place multiplied by the number of days he is NOT in it?? I would love to see that number.

12) Comment by RODEO CLOWN - 25/01/2013

The only reason anyone of “sound mind” in Louisiana would support a presidential bid by Jindal would be to get his sorry, pathetic posterior out of the state and neutralize his insanity by “post noting” his ignorance to the halls of DC. I'm sure Jindal believes he can bring his “dog and pony show” to DC and run roughshod over Congress similar to his handling of the Louisiana legislature over the past five years—want/will not/no way happen.

"Jindal ... calls on the GOP to 'stop being the stupid party', but then he routinely indulges that here at home." Yes! Isn't that remarkable? One more example of the sort of (no-)character who will say anything, anything at all, to get what he wants. And then quite happily tell one or the other, "No, that's not what I said." And there are people who LIKE that!? Who support that?

14) Comment by MBW - 25/01/2013

Bobby Jindal will never be elected president. I'll place my bets right now.

15) Comment by MBW - 25/01/2013

Jindal is such a phony....he calls on the GOP to "stop being the stupid party", but then he routinely indulges that here at home.

The man is a complete fraud. If he runs for president the national press will have him for breakfast.

There is a link to the speech on CSPAN's website. I'd encourage you to take a look to see the Gov in action. First, he bombs with a poorly delivered joke aimed at the recent presidential campaign, then he slugs through a series of non-specific ideas on how to become popular. While we in Louisiana have grown used to "governance" by platitudes, it was clear that the crowd that he was trying to woo, wasn't into the speech. Jindal managed to pull off very few applause lines from the folks he'd need in 2016. It wasn't as bad as the "Happy Mardi Gras" speech from four years ago, but it is certainly evident that the Gov is either so lacking in personal charisma or he's simply still not ready for prime time.

Only small-minded fools would try to tear down Gov. Jindal, who is obviously on a fast track to the GOP presidential nomination. Go, Bobby, go!

19) Comment by gtinla - 25/01/2013

We're seeing how the GOP is recalibrating by attempts to disenfranchise voters in Virginia and three other states. That's a great way to attract new voters!

20) Comment by gary - 25/01/2013

The 2016 election is going to be a cake walk for Hillary (if see decides to run). Jindal, Rand Paul, Mark Rubio and Paul Ryan will out right each other all the way to he primaries, The only hope the R's have is Chris Christie and he is way too liberal for the red meat states. I'm sure the governors of the red states with try to revamp the electoral process, kinda like what our legislators did here in Louisiana with redistricting.

21) Comment by postscript56 - 25/01/2013

Lest he forget, Jindal was a US Congressman during the Bush administration when Republicans expanded both the size and scope of government. So when he whines about bloated federal government, he's partially responsible. As to growing the economy the right-wing way...just look towards home. We have lower unemployment, a growing economy and we're still one of the poorest states with one of the lowest per capita incomes. Why? Because when right-wingers grow the economy you get to work at McDonalds while the Koch brothers get to own them all. And if you can't get by on McDonald's pay while the Koch brothers are buying up Greek islands, you are a lazy taker looking for a handout. I'll never understand why so many hard working people think ultra right-wing economic policies somehow benefit them.

22) Comment by chem - 24/01/2013

Piyush told the group that the GOP has to quit being stupid. well, exactly when is Piyush going to stop being stupid? Nothing he has done in Louisiana has benefitted the people. Piyush is a right-wing ideologue and always will be. Which means he will always be stupid.

23) Comment by Warp7 - 24/01/2013

Jinal is a joke! He needs to pack his bags and leave this state. @being-stupid : That was a really stupid comment. President, in his warped dreams. His administration is exactly opposite of what he spoke about. He is extremely divisive, combative, vengeful and against diversity. He is the biggest hypocrit in the state of Louisiana.

24) Comment by Sidwit - 24/01/2013

Why doesn't he just go ahead and resign and head to Washington. We need a governor who leads not leaves. Can we cut his pay to part time? We're not getting our minies worth. I bet he didn't take questions at this meeting either. He is the republicans Obama.

If BJ doesn't care to govern, he needs to get out of government -- for the first time in his life -- and go into business.

A kick in the teeth for the Bayou Corne folks. He has time to address the national Republican Committe but has yet to address the folks here at home who are STILL having to remain out of their homes. I hope he realizes that if he should join the race for Republican nimination in '16 there will be lots of fodder for his opponents to use and if his opponents don't use it we citizens will make sure it is publicized.

29) Comment by mcBR - 24/01/2013

It will be funny to see him overcompensate for his terrible delivery of the Republican response to the president's first State of the Union.
