Police arrest suspect in Dec. 31 slaying Advocate staff report Jan. 21, 2013 Comments NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Police reported Saturday night they arrested a 23-year-old man accused of killing another man Dec. 31 near the intersection of North Dorgenois and Mazant streets. Keric Mealy was booked into Orleans Parish Prison on a count of second-degree murder in the death of Jared Haynes, police said in a news release. Haynes’ death was the final murder reported in New Orleans in 2012, the release says. Haynes died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, the release says. A coroner’s investigator found a weapon under his body. Several residents told a homicide detective that Mealy and Haynes had been involved in an ongoing dispute for some time, the release says. Mealy is currently serving time in the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Weekend Warrior Program for attempted purse snatching until Oct. 25, 2015, the release says. Mealy has prior arrests that include attempted purse snatching, possession of hydrocodone, possession of alprazolam, careless operation and unlawful use of license.
