State Police: Youngsville man dies in crash

LAFAYETTE — A Youngsville man driving east on La. 14 in Abbeville died Thursday in a single-vehicle crash when his truck veered off the road, overturned, hit a tree and then a business before coming to a stop, State Police said Friday.

David Hilton, 22, was not wearing a seat belt, Trooper Stephen Hammons said in a news release.

Hilton was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vermilion Parish coroner, Hammons said.

The crash at Gross Isle occurred at 4:30 p.m., Hammons said.

State Police said they do not know why Hilton’s 2001 Ford truck left the roadway, or if alcohol were a factor in the crash.

A passenger, Grant Vercher, 27, of Erath, who also was not wearing a seat belt, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital, the release says.

Toxicology samples have been submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Other determinations to the crash remain under investigation, Hammons said.
