Undeterred mall shoppers back day after teen brawl

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies Sunday arrested six teenagers involved in a fight and its aftermath at the Mall of Louisiana on Saturday evening that led to the evacuation of the building, a spokeswoman said.

Deputies continued Sunday to try and unravel what caused people to panic and start running inside the shopping center at about 6 p.m. Saturday, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

The mall plunged into chaos after as many as 200 juveniles descended in the food court in what Hicks said might have been a planned “flash mob.”

A post on Instagram, an Internet social media site, called for teens to meet at the mall, she said. When the crowd gathered in the food court, a large fight broke out, she said.

Flash mobs are when large groups of people connect through social media and meet in a public place, often to sing and/or dance.

The flash mob

Hicks said deputies monitor planned and rumored gatherings, but watching every Internet posting would be very difficult.

The fight caused a “stampede” witnesses said of people rushing to leave.

Hicks said deputies, city police and state troopers all responded to the incident and mall security helped marshal the teens outside.

Hicks said rumors of weapons in the crowd may have factored into the panic, but deputies have not found evidence to confirm those rumors.

Ultimately the mall was closed.

Mall security deferred all questions Sunday to mall management, who could not be reached for comment.

But all appeared to be back to normal at the mall Sunday.

Jeff Walker, 62, of Gonzales, said he went to the mall Sunday with his wife to do some shopping and return items and sensed no uneasiness from people.

“I don’t see any apprehension anywhere,” he said. “I don’t see anybody with any outward signs of tenseness or nervousness.”

Kim Walker, 42, of Gonzales, who is not related to Jeff Walker, was at the mall Saturday afternoon when the incident happened.

She said her daughter remarked Saturday that the crowd was abnormally large, even for a Saturday.

Walker said she went back Sunday to return items and one event would not deter her from going to the mall.

“I don’t feel uncomfortable,” she said. “I think our young people made some bad decisions.”

Tinasha Richardson, 26, of Baton Rouge, owner of the Go! Calendars kiosk near Macy’s was working Saturday night when she saw people, some running, moving toward the exits.

She said she called the Go! Calendars corporate office to let them know what was happening, covered her cash register and left.

Back at work Sunday, she said she did not notice a difference in sales or customers’ attitudes.

“It’s business as usual. I thought it was gonna be real slow, but people are still coming in here like nothing ever happened,” Richardson said.

Hicks said deputies made the following arrests based on probable cause. She did not release the names because they are juveniles:

  • a 14-year-old boy on counts of remaining after forbidden, simple battery and resisting an officer.
  • a 13-year-old girl on a count of disturbing the peace.
  • a 15-year-old girl on a count of remaining after forbidden.
  • a 14-year-old girl on a count of disturbing the peace.
  • a 15-year-old boy on counts of disturbing the peace, remaining after forbidden and resisting an officer.
  • a 14-year-old boy on counts of interfering with a law enforcement investigation and resisting an officer.

It makes me angry to see so many elitist people demonizing the kids at the mall based on the actions of a small few. Particularly those who are using this as an excuse to attack black children and their families. I am a white person and have spent several years teaching in schools that are 90+% black or latino and have found that the overwhelming majority of the kids I taught are good kids and the vast majority of parents care about their kids. They don't need me to defend them, but it angers me to read so many ignorant comments being made by my fellow white people. Get to know people before you judge them. Don't just read the police blotter or watch the local news and decide that all black people are "thugs".

This seems to be an isolated incident. Let's not try and say this is indicative of some larger issues other than people being young and stupid. Speaking of stupid...who came up with the idea that this fight was due to entitlements?? How on earth did you come to that conclusion, especially considering you would have no way of knowing which of these kids' parents, if any, benefit from government aid? Not everything is due to the political policies we don't like.

to " tball " comment: it used to be that malls were a nice addition to a community BECAUSE they were a safe place where teens could hang out and be teenagers; of course, this is no longer the case in today's BR with its new demographics.

Right on nimby - we have a 3rd, 4th and 5th generation of entitlements! The malls need to have a age curfew!

NearBarbarian , merely adding a fact to your comment , sorry if it upset you . underlying causes and effects such as little or no education resulting in a lack of employment , the breakdown of the family unit , entering a 4th generation with little learned from the previous . as a red-man I am more critical of my people than any others , at the same time I am proud of who I am . I've witnessed what "entitlements" can do to a persons initiative . is it wrong to point out success if you've worked hard for it .

Last comment on this topic-I guess that means no letter to the editor from you on Baton Rouges White crime problem or the White zip codes that BRAVE are targeting. You might want to mention the state of Main and how most crimes are committed by Whites in that state. Why am I interested cus I have spent over 30 years trying to help, have given mouth to mouth to Black heart attack victims when working as EMTA back in the 70's have cared for all races when working Psychiatric and have never ever discriminated against a Black when wearing the Badge.

Chucky-No. You and your like-minded commenters are the ones who initiated the race bait and switch. Moreover, you, nimby?, et al have made it clear here and elsewhere that you aren't actually interested in good-faith conversation, historical analysis, dealing with underlying causes and effects, etc. It's always easy--immature, simplistic, sophomoric, childish, un-constructive--to demonize others, take a patronizing/condescending approach to practically every topic, and offer no positive, realistic, or rational insights, proposals, or solutions. Pointing out how perfect, well-adapted, and successful you, your family, your friends, your class, or your race is does not count. Trying to disconnect local events from their larger context is not honest or responsible. And just being general agents provacateurs serves no meaningful purpose. Lastly, if most of us mortal human mongrels, of all hues and upbringings, are beyond help, then why do you Übermenschen even bother to comment? I know: because you need to remind everyone of your preternatural wisdom and perfection. DMJ, Tea Slayer, Space Historian, Scrooge, et al are equipped with more patience and endurance than I. My hat's off to them as they continue to keep you guys in check.

NearBarbarian- Pointing out that White people can be rude and destructive, and how Whites can be as bad as the next guy you are doing the “Oh yea but what about” cry, if you would like to discuss White rudeness and crime write a letter, I am sure you will get many post, now the topic is the MOL the make up of that crowed and Baton Rouge problems, not Oregon or NY or Mississippi.

9) Comment by nimby? - 07/01/2013

"for every instance of a black teen doing something rude and destructive, there'll be a corresponding example of a white teen doing something rude and destructive" . according to the 2010 census whites made up over 70 percent of the population while blacks made up 12 percent . yet they are creating the same amount of "mischief" ? this is acceptable ?

A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR ALL THE BRAVE ...shoppers that came to the mall the day after a ruckus. TRULY PATRIOTS

11) Comment by NearBarbarian - 07/01/2013

Not sure how I upset the electronic screener. Perhaps it was the Web link I posted. Briefly, for every instance of a black teen doing something rude and destructive, there'll be a corresponding example of a white teen doing something rude and destructive: for a recent example, look up Cox Brown of Oregon. Also, during the 80s, I witnessed one two- hundred-plus teen brawl and was involved in another at a school and a Wal-Mart parking lot. During both, the participants were white. We're all humans, ya'll, all capable of doing dumb things that beg all reason. Just read some history and literature for corroboration.

DMJ - the reason this is a race thing is because there were 200+ black kids at the mall that started a riot. Police had to close an entire Mall and have traffic on contra flow. I don't call that young and stupid, I call that a riot. Most of us are afraid of young and stupid anyway and don't want to be around it. People get killed by young and stupid all the time. This isn't New Orleans french quarter. This is Baton Rouge, a place where we use to say it was a good place to raise your kids. Now I don't know about that.

@squiggly - I wouldn't spend too much time around College/Perkins at night if I were you, given the two armed robberies in the last 2 weeks, both perpetrated by blacks. Just saying...

I'm a white male, I grew up in the 60's & 70's, I remember running the roads in the 70's, mainly mid to late 70's, we were pure trouble makers, or as my dad would say, young, dumb, full of blank, blank, and vinegar. I also remember that thin belt very well and knew the back of his hand all to well. I strongly believe the later part was the very reason we all knew our limits. Heck, I remember him putting a few friends in their place also. I remember very well a buddies dad putting us both on the ground one day, dead in front of the police, I never saw that man move, but I knew I was hit, we never did that dumb stunt again. That is all that happened here, young kids being dumb. The only problem I see, there will be no discipline at home. I remember in the late 60's early 70's being dropped off at the Robert E. Lee theater on plank road and spending all day there, believe there was three screens and we would sneak from one movie to another, man we have a blast. Anyway, take what you want from this, I really see no problem here other than the racist remarks. Y'all really want to see something funny, google ""The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia," or catch it on showtime, then come back and comment about race.

23) Comment by Chucky - 07/01/2013

squiggly - I did not see that tradewinns - post said anything about " society is endangered by black people" your Livingston trailer park comment seems to lump a group into the whole and not address the upbringing problem that we have in society. When you look at what 'racial makeup' has the most killings in Baton Rouge and then ask if that group of people could be better served with out hand outs and a safety net that caught them a birth a net i believe that delivers them into enslavement.

24) Comment by squiggly - 07/01/2013

@tradewinns - Do you have any official statistics to back up your assertions? I seriously doubt it. If I'm wrong, please enlighten me by posting links to them. @thedudeabides - Why don't you go take a look in a subdivision like Concord at any time of the day or night, in the Perkins / College Drive area and come back and tell about how society is endangered by black people? Why don't you go to any middle and upper class subdivision that have black people living there and then come and report what you find? Then go to a Livingston parish trailer park and come tell me what you find there.

25) Comment by tradewinns - 07/01/2013

it's not the race of individuals but their upbringing that's what is causing problems. and who is to blame for allowing the problems? society. we, in our "holier than thou" attitude, have allowed some to do nothing and we keep them supplied with the necessities of life and something to enjoy themselves with anyway. this has brought us nothing but problems. the few the program has actually help are few and far between. we seem to increase the useless by leaps and bounds over any "saved". the program is a failure in helping people help themselves. should the program be changed? surely. will it be changed? and lose those votes? never!

28) Comment by thedudeabides - 07/01/2013

say what you want to make yourself feel better. Once the names of these juveniles are released they will all be colored names--lil knuck knuck, Joesha, Lakesha, and so on... I have some gift certificates from Christmas but I will wait for a segregated mall to open up to use them. If you idiots think the black population isn't a cancer to society just drive over to Prescott Blvd, Mohican after dark and see if you still think that our society is not endangered by the colored people

29) Comment by spacehistorian - 07/01/2013

Previous threads on Sunday's edition had a very racial component to them. Several people proposed that black youth were not as socialized, cultured or educated enough to know how to behave in public. As a Historian I know that complaints about the moral decline of society, especially the young people, has been a common theme of every civilization that left records behind. The ancient Greeks had their issues with troublesome youth. Kenneth John Freeman for his Cambridge dissertation published in 1907 discussed this pressing issue for the ancients. He was presenting his own summary of the complaints directed against young people in ancient times, "The counts of the indictment are luxury, bad manners, contempt for authority, disrespect to elders, and a love for chatter in place of exercise. … Children began to be the tyrants, not the slaves, of their households. They no longer rose from their seats when an elder entered the room; they contradicted their parents, chattered before company, gobbled up the dainties at table, and committed various offences against Hellenic tastes, such as crossing their legs. They tyrannised over the paidagogoi and schoolmasters." I remember some of the disruptive and possibly illegal activities my friends and I did while in high school and I don't doubt the adults of the early 1980's thought us hooligans. Thankfully there were no cell phones to take pictures or shoot video of our bad behavior. We were white, middle-class kids but we had testosterone poisoning, liked drinking and were equipped with brains that had not fully developed leaving us with poor choice making skills and even poorer impulse control. I am surprised we all make it through high school without serious incident but we did. Most all of us went on to college, graduated, had families, worked, paid our taxes and otherwise were upstanding citizens. I can't imagine the intense interaction and peer pressure brought to bear by social media on phones, tablets and computers. What would have been a minor incident in my era would not be Tweeted, Facebooked or IM'd around the world before anyone would have time to stop and think about what they were doing. The youth of today face unique and difficult cultural forces that did not exist in the 80's. Technology has been a blessing and a curse but children are still children and need our guidence, boundaries and consequences for actions in order to learn how to function in our sociaety. Race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, etc., can't be the card we play to quickly assign blame after an incident. No issue is ever black and white but filled with shades of gray that require further inquiry. I hope a rational and evidence-based investigation is conducted and any guilty parties are charged and have their day in court.

@thedudeabides: Unfortunately we gave up that luxury years ago (seemed like a good idea at the time, right?). But if you do happen to find a place, please let the rest of us know where it is...

Spacehistorian...as you enter Earth's atmosphere I encourage you to read any newspaper in this metro area. Black on black crime is increasing and common. No one is suggesting whites do not commit crime, but black youth-in general-are killing over shoes, drugs, turf, etc. at an absurd rate. It in the stats. Read it. It is there. Undeniable. Everyone knows.
